1989 Volvo 760 GLE Estate 2.8

Summary:

This brick flies!!

Faults:

Whats gone wrong? Not a lot!

Normal routine servicing plugs, filters oil etc + the following:

1 full exhaust system on purchase (92,000 miles) Stainless steel from manifold back.

Changed all shocks at 150,000.

Changed all rubber bushes on suspension front and rear at the same time as shocks.

Changed front disks, calipers and all pads. at 150,000.

The odd relay, normal wear & tear.

General Comments:

Drive on average 20 to 30,000 miles per year, regular commute 60 miles, it goes great! get there as fresh as when you started.

Great load lugger, had 20 full concrete paving slabs in the back once, didn't notice the weight driving, just wore the mud flaps down a bit scraping on the road!!! and still didn't bottom out the suspension.

Tows like a dream, never any problems.

Loads of space for the kids in the back and the dog gets lost in the luggage area!

Leather seats just about worn in now, now signs of cracking or loose stitching, roof lining good as well.

Great round town, never had any problems in tight areas (Devon villages!) and it's so easy to park with the tight turning circle.

Bit heavy on fuel, 20 to 26 round town, but 36 to 40 on a run cruising, will cruise all day 80 to 90 no problems with more to give! This is one quick brick!!

This is the fourth Volvo we have had, still got 3 of them! 440 turbo at 120K miles, 740 GL at 280K miles.

You must drive like a fairy getting mpg like this dream on Volvo boy.

Al-thou I'm not very familiar with this car in particular , the difference in the fuel mileage-could relate to the reviewer being from England where a gallon of fuel is larger (imperial gallon) --more mp-gs.

I am from England too. I would expect 16-18 mpg round town and 26-28 mpg on a run!

1989 Volvo 760 Turbo Intercooler 2.3

Summary:

A big, thirsty, comfortable and very fast barge

Faults:

One of the seat motors has stopped working.

The original stereo has stopped working.

The Turbo stopped working (ceased up).

General Comments:

Gorgeous drive. You feel strangely safe, and when the Turbo works right you feel strangely powerful. :) People say, "Oh another barge on the road...". But I don't care. Big is beautiful.

1989 Volvo 760 Turbo Intercooler 2.3 petrol turbo

Summary:

Big, fast, comfortable, looks great!

Faults:

The air-conditioning system has a leak, but we haven't yet bothered to fix, other than that no problems!

General Comments:

A fantastic car to drive with excellent acceleration.

Great for motorway driving, but also around town, you couldn't feel safer once you're inside and behind the wheel.

Smart enough to take anywhere, but still good for shopping trips.

Enough room to fit a washing machine and a cooker and more in the back!

Our 740 was good, but the 760 is even better. Only downside is the fuel consumption as it needs/likes Super (high octane) which is getting more expensive by the day. If I had to drive a long commute to work I might have to consider another car for the fuel economy, but we won't part with the 760.

1988 Volvo 760 Turbo 2.3 turbo intercooler

Summary:

A very serious secondhand buy at silly prices

Faults:

My oil cooler for the transmission split at around 160,000.

A pipe related to the turbo split. Just cost £7 to repair.

Driver's seat has worn badly.

Eats front tyres and brake pads with a big appetite.

General Comments:

Very reliable car, never once stopped me from driving.

Started first time every morning.

Comfortable on long journeys.

Makes an excellent tow car and load lugger.

Superb family car that puts up with all the abuse that you can throw at it.

Will be sorely missed by all the family.
