2001 Alfa Romeo 146 Twin Spark 16V 1.8 petrol from UK and Ireland
Summary:
Fast, mechanically simple and reliable
Faults:
Oil leak. Common in seals and gaskets, they require attention to prevent further damage.
Unstable idling: Problems with the throttle body (dirt or position sensor) causing the engine to stall and die, such as at traffic lights.
Camshaft variator failures, a common fault that produces a sound similar to a diesel engine, especially when starting, and loss of performance.
The clutch slips repeatedly, but after a short time the noise disappears.
The air conditioner works well, but it has happened that it stopped cooling and I had to have it checked by a specialist.
General Comments:
The 146 is a powerful car; the mere fact that it has 140 hp, being a car that is almost 25 years old, says a lot about it, even more so when the engine is not large (1.8).
The engine features a twin-spark design with dual overhead camshafts, multipoint electronic fuel injection, and a 16-valve cylinder head, but with improved power-to-displacement efficiency; without sacrificing the flexibility so valued in urban driving.
Of course, its heart beats above 5,000 rpm, but that doesn't mean it needs a breather below that range. The enthusiast of spirited driving can easily work it through gear changes with the tachometer needle fluctuating between 5,000 and 7,000 rpm.
The suspension has direct steering that makes handling fun, and thanks to the fact that any mistake can be corrected with the accelerator that commands the 140 available HP.
As for the driving position, the driver's seat is height-adjustable, as is the steering column. It features typical Alfa/Fiat multifunction armrests, headrests positioned well away from the driver's neck, a well-distributed pedal layout, and a gear selector within easy reach. These adjustments allow anyone to find a comfortable and relaxed driving position.
The interior space is good for its class, especially the front passenger seat, which, thanks to the curve of the dashboard, can be moved forward, freeing up extra space in the rear. It comfortably accommodates five average-sized adults.
Despite being a car of several years, it has the fundamental safety equipment such as ABS, driver and passenger airbags, two electric windows and mirrors, automatic climate control, side protection bars, automatic fire suppression system, internal adjustment of front headlights, fog lights, and four headrests.
The engine is quiet up to 5,000 rpm, with a distinctly sporty character, incredibly quick acceleration, and enviable performance.
The car easily exceeds 125-130 mph, impressive for a car that isn't even a 2-liter.
In conclusion, it's a family sedan, with good interior space and an undeniable sporty character (like almost every Alfa Romeo) for those who want to enjoy it.
