1998 Audi A3 1.8 T from UK and Ireland

Summary:

Good performance, handling and reliability, but massive quality problems

Faults:

Not long after buying car, had to have driver seat replaced due to excessive movement. Replaced again 2 years later due to same problem (warranty).

Returned car to garage due to squeaking windows. Door adjustment fixed problem.

Car wouldn't start due to immobiliser not recognising key. Ignition barrel replaced, but problem still returns intermittently (warranty).

Knocking noise from steering resulted in replacement steering rack and universal joint (£1300).

On board computer reset button stopped working. Garage replaced dashboard cluster to rectify (£130, Audi UK paid 70%).

Car now back in garage because air bag warning light is on continuously.

Gear stick shakes when accelerating in 1st gear. Garage has been unable to repair.

General Comments:

Still on first set of tyres and bulbs after > 33000 miles.

Car handles very well.

Performance is great.

Don't rate Audi Service.

1998 Audi A3 1.6 from UK and Ireland

Summary:

Very good performance for a new 1.6

Faults:

Company car.

Nothing.

General Comments:

This car, although obviously heavy, you do not feel it when you drive it.

Performance is great, I wonder what the 1.8 turbo would be like. Steering light, nice precise gearbox.

Nice interior and looks. Not too soft like most new cars.

1998 Audi A3 T Sport 1.8 Turbo from UK and Ireland

Faults:

Water leak from climate control unit which affected the CPU. This took almost 6 months to rectify. The problem turned out to be a small bolt in the climate control unit which was dropped whilst the car was being manufactured. The bolt blocked a pipe and caused the leak which in turn caused the problem with the CPU. Once Audi UK finally solved the problem, they sent me a cheque for £600-00 and a letter of apology for the inconvenience! Appart from this, I have enjoyed a year of trouble free motoring.

General Comments:

An excellent all round vehicle. It is now however superseded by the S3.
