2003 Audi A6 4.2Q 4.2 V8 from North America

Summary:

Expensive, but worth every penny!

Faults:

Wiper motor.

Headlight positioning sensor.

Exhaust recirculation hose.

General Comments:

I wanted the A6 4.2 since it was introduced in 2000, but they were cost prohibitive to buy new, so when the opportunity presented itself to buy, I did. I can honestly say it has become one of my most favorite cars, and I have had a LOT of cars over my lifetime.

It is solid, fast, well appointed... and with the wide body kit exclusive to the 4.2... it is beautiful!

My only gripes would be mileage, which averages only 13 MPG with my lead foot, and the handling, which tends to be more on the soft side, but then again my car does not have the optional sport package, which may have corrected some its propensity to lean in hard corners.

2003 Audi A6 Quattro 2.7T from North America

Summary:

Great looking, poorly built

Faults:

Multiple electrical problems including Air Bag light, seat belt light, garage door openers, electric seat - been in the shop more times than I can remember for various electrical issues.

Fit issues - door panels came loose, electric window buttons came out of door.

Problems with vibration during drive. Brought back car multiple times, purchased new rims, new tires, etc. and still have same problem. Spent a lot of $ with no improvement.

Head gasket leak was most recent problem. Car smelled of.

Car seems to be in the shop every eight weeks or so for some issue or another.

This is a car to lease, not own. If you do choose to purchase, make sure to get the extended warranty - saves significant $ in the long run.

So all these problems... what did you do to abuse the car? Audi cars are renowned for their reliability & long life - unless abused.

I agree I had a 1998 Audi A4 from new and had a starting problem with the car ONLY after 1500 miles which was shocking. Overall the car wasn't bad, but mechanically I'm not sure. Got rid of car after 35,000 miles in 2001.

Is this car like the Passat? I have just been reading the comments on those, they sound attrocious reliability-wise.

I have had several Audis, both petrol and diesel, and apart from some minor electrical glitches (windows and locks), they have been solid, reliable and dependable. It is very important to keep the cars maintained at an Audi dealership. If these cars are as unrealiable as you suggest, then I am not sure why the resale values, particularly on TDIs, is so strong - it just doesn't make sense. The car buying public are not that poorly informed.

I have driven Audis for nearly thirty years now. It amazes me to hear weird views about them. I live in a country where roads are like moon craters when they are not like cattle tracks. I have never had a breakdown on account of design or engineering flaws. I use my 24-year old 80 for my daily movements, and the thing has refused to stop. I have just bought a 1.9 TDi 130 SE, and yes, someone above knows what he is talking about. The car is just out of this world!

2003 Audi A6 2.7T from North America

Summary:

A high-performance, high-priced sedan

Faults:

The brake rotors and pads had to be replaced at 11000 miles. The brakes still have a shake when applying at rapid descent. The tires are giving off a lot of road noise. May be attributable to the low profile nature, but is extremely loud.
