2004 Audi A6 Avant 3 liter V6 from North America

Summary:

Very nice car, I'm glad I bought it

Faults:

One tire was out of round and replaced by the dealer.

Hit a pothole which bent 2 rims and ruined another tire, requiring replacement. Pirelli replaced the tire without charge.

Gas mileage is poor in mixed suburban driving, 14-15 mpg. Highway is better, about 21 mpg.

General Comments:

I have the 17inch wheel option, low profile tires. These are particularly susceptible to damage from potholes, since there is not much tire between the wheel and the ground. However the wide tires do contribute to the handling, so I would buy them again.

Aside from the gas mileage I have been very happy with the A6 Avant (wagon). It's smooth, comfortable, peppy, and handles like a true European sports sedan. There is lots of room with the rear seats down, and with the seats up, rear seat passengers find the ride very comfortable. The car looks good, draws favorable comments, even in a country where station wagons are considered dowdy and old fashioned.

The fact that Audi pays for all standard maintenance for 4 years is a major benefit, it is wonderful to bring the car in for service and pay nothing when I pick it up.

2004 Audi A6 3.0 liter from North America

Summary:

Terrific driving machine

Faults:

In the 9 months (and 15,000+ miles) I've owned the car the only thing that has gone wrong is one summer day the front passenger seat warmer came on by itself. I turned the car off then on and the problem corrected itself and has not reoccurred.

General Comments:

This is, by far, the best car I've ever owned with respect to reliability, performance and comfort. It is also the most expensive car I've ever owned.

The ride is smooth at every speed, the acceleration is seamless with plenty of pickup.

Within one week of owning the car I was in Lake Placid, NY towards the end of a snowy winter season. While descending a hill and the road veering to the right the Audi held on. The SUV in front of me rolled over twice. I was very happy to have Quattro

2004 Audi A6 3.0 V6 TDI Quattro from Germany

Summary:

The NEW A6 3.0 Diesel Quattro

Faults:

Great so far!

General Comments:

I sometimes have the privilege of driving newer cars for an extended period of time. I did this with the 5-series, E-Class, and now the new Audi A6.

Firstly, it looks fantastic! It is a head turner wherever you go! Performance is great as well. The pick-up is smooth and fast, and the top speed that I reached was 254 km/h (even though the statistics said that it would not go further than 244 km/h). This is on the Germany Autobahn.

I am not so sure about the reliability, since I have only had this car for 5000km. I am sure that they have improved a lot from the previous model, but then again it just came into the market so there are properly several problems that will be uncovered at later stages.

The fuel consumption is tremendous! If, however, you use the cruise control on the highway you could get approximately 7 liters for 100 km.

I won't have the car much longer so I will post any update I may have in the meantime.

Interesting review, especially because you've driven the E class & series as well. Any comments on preferences? Would be very useful for me as I'm considering all three for my next car purchase.

Sorry for not commenting sooner - I haven't checked out my reviews for quite some time.

The E-class has a very clunky transmission - not as smooth as previous models and definitely not as smooth as the A6. I drove the E220 CDI so pick-up wasn't as great as the A6 either.

The BMW 5 series is a great car - the ultimate driving machine for sure. However, the interior leaves a lot to be desired and feel as though the A6 is very strong in that aspect.

I hope you chose the right car!

Whatever you buy, make sure it's got a TURBO, otherwise you won't be able to remap the ECU to get a lot more BHP and torque. -A56 Driver.
