The engine sounds like it has a piston slap on cold startup.
It goes away after about a 1 minute warmup.
Our Audi mechanic does not know what the problem is, because it doesn't happen on every cold startup.
We are wondering if this is just the design of the engine for our year, or is there something very wrong here?
I am looking for a response from other Audi owners.
Last year I had the dash odometer light replaced and now the outside temperature light in the dash is burned out. The mechanic said this one is not a bulb and costs $165 for the part plus labor, and that I should replace the transmission position light the same time. That part is $175 plus labor.
Great touring car with comfort.
You feel safe at high speeds with how it holds the road.
On the low end the car is slow.
The light bulbs required for the backlighting in the temp, trip computer and selector position displays ARE ordinary bulbs - 'grain of wheat' type 12V 50mA. They cost about 25p (USD 0.40) and are available in any electronic suppliers.
The procedure is well documented in the following websites:

Just bought an A6 2.0l petrol estate, and it sounds like hydraulic tappets are loose on start up, but after 30 seconds or so and it runs like a dream.

My 95 A6 Avant 2.8 is a dream of a car with over 80k miles on it. my outside temp light burned out as well, but do we really care? there are only two chronic problems with my car (and many others like it) : a) constant brake wear resulting in extremely hot brakes on road trips, periodic burning pad smell, and black soot coating my wheels. b) you cannot use the cup-holders and the arm rest at the same time!
I have a 1995 Audi A6 Avant 2.0 for 2 years now, no problems! great car, 160,000 miles!!! on clock.
Sounds like piston slap at startup, but this is normal
until knock sensor kicks in.
Outside temp gauge bulb blown, repaired it myself with
a very small bulb and some solder! buying a new unit
is not worth it.
Starting to idle a little bit rough lately, not sure whats
up, maybe lamda (O2) sensor gone, but time for the Audi
garage to check it out...
Anyone else notice the transmission is not meshed perfectly
to the engine? can notice a bump at sudden acceleration and deceleration, normal for audi's I am told, this is the
one thing that annoys me about this car, would consider
other makes next time purely because of this.
But they are long lasting beasts.
95 A6 sedan with about 124k miles. If maintained properly will last a very long time. It is a very solid well built machine. It is definitely made for the open road, a great highway car. It passes with ease at highway speeds. I've taken it on two 18hr straight trips and was comfortable the whole ride. I've only had a problem with the radio; it shuts-off when I'd turn down the volume and shuts-off intermittently while playing. Aside from that it rides like a dream. A great buy!
Recently bought a 95 A6 over here in the UK in Scotland. Very happy with it. Very solid and safe feeling and very comfortable, car has covered 106,000 miles and drives like a new car. Outside temperatue gauge bulb was gone when I bought the car, but I had the dash out in 15mins and two small screws hold the unit in. Once dismantled a small soldering gun on the bulb wires and it was removed in about a minute and a new bulb soldered in place. Cost less than a dollar, time less than an hour.
I've owned my 95 Audi A6 Quattro for about a year now and I must say I am pleased. It rides very smoothly. I hear a fluttering noise from the engine. It comes and goes, but other than that. I love it.
Hi there have owned my 1995 a6 quattro for past 5 years has 140k on clock and drives like new both temp gauge and gear selector lights gone, but soldering tip will be implemented asap I have had tapping noise on engine on two occasions both times one of the spark plugs had become lose so check that or make sure the s/plug leads are fitted tight to the plugs had to replace a number of items that have warn down of deteriated brake hoses, flexy and solid ones, sump bung, bleeding nipples, cat-converters, power steering hose (these are expencive in UK, but you can have them made up by pipe maker) I was charged £60 fully fitted compaired to £200 just for the part from audi apart from that reguler oil/filter changes keep the car young.
Safe driving all.
I am looking for some input about my 1995 Audi A6 Avanti 2.8L. I would like to know if anyone has had problems with the check engine light coming on intermittently? The oil pressure is good, temperature is good, car runs smoothly with no hesitation; nothing except that darn light. If I stop and turn car off and restart, the light goes off. If it is a sensor is it important to get it fixed? Or is it just an annoyance? Would appreciate any input. cb.
Same problem w my 95 a6 sedan. Dealer said it was crud in egr that could be "picked" out or use carb cleaner. love this car @160000. anybody got probs w central locks flaking out? had to pull fuse & go manual cuz it was possessed!aftermarket remote starter from other owner may have contributed.
