The auto gearbox is a problem.
50% of the time the gearbox is OK.
For the other 50% it goes into limp home mode (3rd gear).
I have tried changing the oil and filter twice, but no luck.
I would appreciate any advice on my gearbox.
Apart from this the car is wonderful. I get 29mpg which for a 4x4 V8 is outstanding.
Perhaps may be you should look inside other reviews of this gorgeous car. The problem with the transmission was described in detail.
Hm, those audis use ZF-trannies, don't they? I guess they are similar to the gearboxes on BMW 7-series (BMW e38 also uses ZF-gearboxes). They use only a special type of esso oil and ONLY filtran filters. And you can't use anything else om them. This is important. If you do you're bound to get more trouble. Now, I don't know if this rule apply to the type of gearbox on an audi A8 like your car, just a thought. You should ask some audi-mechanic about it and what type of oil and filter to use. It is also very important that these "maintanace-free" trannies get serviced in the correct way, meaning that they are refilled correctly. Actually servicing these modern trannies isn't as simple as it was on the good old cars. Lots of dealers won't even touch them. But in the hands of a specialist, I'm sure your problem can be sorted out.
