2001 Audi S4 from North America

This car is amazing!

Routine maintenance is a bit spendy.

General Comments:

I thought my dad's old 86 Audi Coupe was fun, but this S4 is the greatest sports car I've ever driven.

In tight fast turns you can feel exactly where the wheels are and how well they're gripping. That may sound normal, but this car feels completely different than anything else (I don't know how else to explain it).

Very comfortable seats, front and back. Nice instrument panel and sound system.

Your review is somewhat helpful on the Audi S4. However, more elaboration would give your readers a better picture of the car. Not to mention, disadvantages of the car would help. Other than that, your review is better than nothing.

Great car let down by dealer

The front brakes were replaced under warranty after I purchased the car, however that didn't stop the dealership trying to get me to pay for them!

The front bumper sits badly out of line from factory. The dealership said this is how it was designed to be.

The car has been back to the dealership 5 times to have the centre rear headrest replaced under warranty, however it never seems to get done.

The factory S4 alloys, like the RS4 wheels, were made from a very soft metal, causing them to buckle. This can be felt through the steering wheel whilst driving.

Various mysterious problems with the stereo not playing, but after turning off and turning back on it will then work. Sometimes it won't pick up preset stations when there is a clear signal. Again, will usually find the station once it is reset.

General Comments:

I really enjoy this car for its power and torque, understated looks, comfort (in the front seats), and generally build quality is good.

Power from the V6 engine is effortless and sometimes you can find yourself cruising on the highway at 110kmh in 4th and not realising it, the engine being so smooth and quiet.

Suspension obviously wasn't designed for all-out performance in mind. It can be quite wafty when cornering hard, but does give a good compromise of sportiness and comfort.

The steering can be quite snatchy on anything, but the most perfect roads.

Rear seat leg room is too tight for anyone, but a child. Sitting adults in the back requires significant forward movement of the front seats, which compromises front leg room.

Fuel economy is surprisingly good- 12.7L/100km mixed driving. (And I'm certainly not the most timid of drivers). It is much more economical than my old Impreza STi, which would average around 18L/100km.

It's such a shame that the Audi dealer spoiled what should have been a pleasurable car-buying experience.

Their laziness has cost me so much time running backwards and forwards to the dealership chasing up work that wasn't done. The dealership was so unhelpful that in the end I offered to give them back the car if they couldn't get their act together. This was met by such rudeness from the manager at the dealership, that I vowed never to deal with the company again.

I will most probably buy another Audi, but next time it will not be from an Audi dealer.

Beautiful and fast, but not built to high quality

Crankshaft main seal failed soaking the clutch with oil. Required clutch replacement. Repaired under warranty.

Rear hatch misaligned from factory. Repaired under warranty.

Alignment required adjustment on delivery of vehicle. Repaired under warranty.

Headlight washer pump failed. Repaired under warranty.

Handbrake handle fell off, 3 times. Repaired under warranty, 3 times. Currently broken again.

Driver's seat rocks back and forth. Dealer claims this is "normal".

Warped front brake rotors. Replaced under warranty.

Rattle in dashboard. Dealer has repeatedly attempted to repair. Still rattling.

General Comments:

The car is beautiful inside and out.

The engine has wonderful torque and power.

All-wheel-drive grip is phenomenal.

Steering feedback is excellent.

Safe and secure.

Driven at 8/10ths the car provides absolutely effortless speed.

Dealer service is awful.

Long term quality is horrible.

Suspension is soft and squishy. The car wallows and bounces. Understeer is terrible.

Transmission shifter throw is about as long as a bus, and less precise.

Brakes are overboosted, grabby, and soft.

Seats are too wide and not securely mounted.

The car is very heavy, and feels like it.

I bought a yellow 2000 S4 Avant with 90,000kms (60,000 miles) and have had a list a mile long of problems.

1. Gearbox (replaced under car dealer warranty - $18,000AU (that's australian $$) - think of them as Canadian $$)

2. LCD Display had pixels missing - still arguing that this should be replaced under warranty

3. Drive Shaft replaced

4. Flywheel caused engine to rattle when turning off - relpaced

5. Clutch was slipping.

Either the car was thrashed to death or I got a lemon. Feels like I'm driving a 2 tonne car!

Previous car Subaru WRX.

I RECENTLY BOUGHT A BLACK 2000 AUDIO S4. Since buying it, I have spent over $5k fixing the timing belts and water pump and alternator. I love the looks of the car, but the reliabilty is not that good. I had the car break down on the freeway and had to get it towed home. The reason that time was the alternator. Before owning this car, I had a Chevy Silverado with very little to no problems. I am currently trying to sell the car and will never buy a used Audi again.
