1968 Austin 1100 review from Australia and New Zealand

"Economic runabout"

What things have gone wrong with the car?

First gear made a constant whine.

It had no odometer.

Speedometer ribbon snapped.

General comments?

Surprisingly this little gem was rust free. Unlike my Morris 1300, which fell apart.

Again an early pet project, this was my Dad's work car because it was so cheap to run, and I failed my license, so of course I had to keep the car until I felt confident enough to drive.

At the time I got the Morris, both cars got repainted at the same time, however the Austin became a French Racing Blue with the black Nike stripes on the side. Unlike the Morris, we kept all the chrome on the car as is.

At some point the gearbox needed to be repaired. The result was an incessant whine in first gear. Driving it, we got used to it.

It was sold on to a collector in Birkenhead whose grandson pranked it badly. It was traded in and scrapped. Damn shame really, because that car was mint.
