1978 BMW 3 Series 316 1.6 petrol/2.0 petrol turbo conversion from Norway

Summary:

Absolutely hysterical build

Faults:

Race build and "home made" turbo conversion based on a 2.0 normal aspiration engine. Bought a 900€ (NOK 9000) 316 with a burnt engine. Engine conversion. Turbo from old Iveco truck and home made plumbing.

Clutch slipped and burnt out, replaced with race clutch.

Prop shift joint broke after a few days.

Drive shafts lasted a month.

Differential shattered.

Burnt several valves, that was replaced and remachined.

Changed head gasket 3 times.

Etc etc.

Engine finally detonated with a broken rod poking out the side of the engine block.

General Comments:

Absolutely hysterical build we did, some friends and me. Probably 260-270 hp. Virtually undriveable. All boost at 4500 rpm and above. Massive turbo lag.

Would rip the rear tires in all gears when wet.

Completely unsafe to drive, but really fun.

Would you buy another car from this manufacturer? Yes
