1989 BMW 3 Series iS 2.5 from North America

Summary:

Low price - high performance

Faults:

A little water leakage into the cabin. This was easily fixed.

Crank for sunroof was functional but quite poor. I replaced this for 30$.

General Comments:

This car is an unbelievable deal, you get performance and style for less than 10,000$? Best used car on the market. A must buy for all 16 year olds who want to get a nice first car without shelling out the cash needed for some of the "alternatives".

This car has huge performance. 186hp is unbelievable for a car of this size! It's very quick and can easily get you killed if you'd like, so be careful!

Durability is a big part of a car purchase, especially an import. Buy an Audi or VW and you're asking for a huge repair bill. BMW's are very popular and so there are tons of parts at local wreckers, this makes the BMW 3-series very inexpensive to maintain.

Overall a 10/10 for this automobile that completely encompasses "The Ultimate Driving Experience."

1989 BMW 3 Series 4 door saloon 1.8i from UK and Ireland

Summary:

Fantastic for single people everywhere

Faults:

New cam lifters and followers at 110,000 miles as the engine is very "clattery" at certain revs.

Water pump disintegrated at speed on the A14, but no engine damage. 145,000 miles on the original pump.

Central locking niggles - many parts replaced.

Sunroof handle broken.

General Comments:

Superb to drive, handling magnificent, power and grace.

Little room in the back.

Parts and servicing a constant expense.

1989 BMW 3 Series 325i Touring 2.5 petrol from UK and Ireland

Summary:

A solid, beautiful to drive car

Faults:

Air inlet manifold gasket leak.

New rear discs and pads.

Most rubber hosing in the engine compartment renewed.

New fuel injection relay (old part number unreliable).

Worn parts replaced in the rear suspension.

General Comments:

Beautiful engine note, worth the money!

Road holding fine in the dry, dangerous in the wet. Respect the car in the wet.

Good firm seats, very little interior wear for a 12 year old car.

Good dash layout. Simple, and well built.

25 to 31 mpg range, typical 300 miles per £40 tank of petrol.

I use an independent BMW mechanic and save £

1989 BMW 3 Series Convertible 2.5 from Switzerland

Summary:

Clean looks, good performance

Faults:

Not much considering its age. Only a water pump I replaced as a precaution.

The rear seat (leather) split so I replaced it, but this is not a fault. The hood also had a split rear window, so I replaced it.

Generally these cars are very reliable despite being built to a price.

General Comments:

This has been a really nice car. I must say, however, that the interior materials, especially the door trims, are rather cheap, apart from the BMW leather sports seats which are fine. I had one before with power steering, which was lousy, so this one has manual steering which is far better except when parking. In the 80s this was a really fast car, but lesser machines these days put it to shame. Still, worth keeping and great with the roof down.

1989 BMW 3 Series 316i benzin from Greece

Summary:

Very good car

Faults:

Generally no great problems. I think that the Carter (oil bath) is very low. Actually I crashed it one time. In my car it was about 13-15 cm from the ground. Also that the fuel pump makes a noise.

General Comments:

I think is a very good car, very beautiful and if you like sports driving it is wonderful.

This is a very good car with lots of power.

1989 BMW 3 Series 325i SE 2.5i from UK and Ireland

Summary:

Excellent vehicle with awesome power

Faults:

Nothing at all has gone wrong. I had it serviced, when it was due, and little things were recommended, ie. replace rear silencer box, a couple of new suspension bushes, it could do with a new rocker gasket, the main thing was a new cambelt. Still, that was only a recommendation.

General Comments:

The car is excellent. Keep it clean and get good comments on it every week. If it needs new parts, non BMW are a LOT cheaper.
