2001 Chevrolet Astra 2.0 gasoline from Brazil

Summary:

I'd have another one if I was to buy a mid-size car (or compact, by US standards)

Faults:

The "lambda sensor", which controls gas emission started malfunctioning when the car had around 40000Km. The symptom is the yellow alert lamp on the console turning on from time to time. No hope in replacing it. After some time it starts turning on again... I gave up replacing it as there's no visible impact.

General Comments:

The car is great for it's category. Good engine (could be a bit more economic), good gearbox, elegant design and very stable, specially on highways.

2002 Chevrolet Astra Elegance 2.2 gasoline from Venezuela

Summary:

Great German Car

Faults:

The air conditioning failed at 22.000km. The cause of this was the coil of the air compressor that burned and damaged the clutch and accessories belt. Cost around 500 American dollars and a week to be fix.

Other than its regular maintenance, nothing.

General Comments:

The car was imported from Germany and is sell in my country as a Chevrolet.

The engine is outstanding, but you have to go over 4.000 RPM to feel the power.

The brakes are excellent. My car is also equipped with the electronic stability program and traction control. The electronics have saved me from two severe crashes.

Cruising in the car is great, very quiet and can maintain high speeds without effort. Very roomy interior too.

The autonomy is fantastic. I accomplished 615km with a tank at 140km/h.

Built quality is great, although in bumpy roads it has some noises.

2000 Chevrolet Astra 1.4 from Singapore

Summary:

Good, reliable car, although unexciting

Faults:

No major ones to date. The minor issue has been the maintenance free battery that came with the car. It tends to die on us (twice) very suddenly.

General Comments:

1.4L is slightly underpowered, but we wanted a manual car and it was only offered as a 1.4.

When on the road it handles very well. We wished the insulation was better as the road noise does sometimes intrude a little too much.

Consumption is comparable (city+highway) is about 14-15km/L which is quite good considering the car is heavy. We don't try to be the first off the line, which helps the consumption.

With a 1.4 liter, you are never going to be first off the line whether you try to or not.

Unless the other vehicle is a mule cart.

Shouldn't this be an OPEL rather than a Chevrolet?

2001 Chevrolet Astra GL 1.8 MPFI from Brazil

Summary:

The greatest car I'll ever have

Faults:

Driver's door noise @ 15000km.

Electronic Fuel Injection broke down at 30000km.

General Comments:

Astra is in my opinion's one of the most beautiful GM cars ever designed.

It is comfortable, reliable and has conquered the hearts of Brazilians.

For sure if it weren't an expensive car I would buy the top sport version of it.

Opel is made by GM which makes Chevrolet. They are the same. The new Chevrolet Cobalt in North America is on an Opel body. As is the Saturn Ion.
