1987 Chevrolet Chevette from North America - Comments

I had to replace the starter and the alternator. The a/c never worked, and I got stuck in a snow bank and ripped out the speedometer cable.

My Chevette was a dog-ugly silver beast, but of all the cars I've owned, that one was the most resilient. I went for over six months without checking the oil. When I finally popped the hood and checked it, there wasn't a drop of oil in it. Not even a smudge. The car still ran, and ran well. After I lost the speedometer, I drove without one for a few months. When I finally replaced the cable, my mechanic was amazed that there was no grease in the transmission. At all. For four months. I drove that car to places no 4WD would go and I never had any trouble. Most people don't believe me, but the Chevette is the most indestructible car on earth.

I agree with your comment of the chevette. I have always loved the chevette. My friend makes fun of me because my love of chevettes. In-fact I am going to look at a chevette after school.

You're not crazy. I've got two right know, and I've had 5 in my life time, you can't kill them, put 2 12'' subs in the hatch and it will slam like its got 4. love the car,

Believe it or not, but one of the most sought-after cars in the compact size class for demolition derbies is the Chevette.

While a lot of that has to do with its being rear-wheel drive, it is also because it is of much heavier construction than the other small cars of its era, especially Japanese.

The Chevette gives the impression of being a scaled-down version of a large car, while the other cars were designed from the start to be small and lightweight for high gas mileage and therefore more fragile.

So if you really like Chevettes and find a decent one for sale, better grab it, or you may see it with no glass and a number spray painted on the side at your next county fair's main event!

That last posting must be old. I rarely see a Chevette these days. Now I know where they all went. I think they already used up the Chevette supply a few years ago and are now using other things.

My 87 Chevette Scooter lasted me a long time. I drove it from the time I was in high school (17 yrs old) up until a few months ago (29 yrs old). The exhaust was gone on it and I drove it for awhile like that. When the muffler finally fell of, I took it in and got new exhaust from the manifolds to the tailpipe. Two days later the temp went to -30c and I died and I never did get it started again. It lived it's life and served me well over the years. I was going to try to sell it until some punk kids decided to smash the rear window out of it. The poor thing looks like a junker now. but I still must say it was a great car over the years.

I saved my 1987 Chevette and looking for Parts. Is there any Left?

I have a 1987 chevy chevette. To be honest its very reliable. Anything that goes wrong with it is usually very small and cheap to fix. It died today I thought I blew the engine and it just needed a simple boost.

Yet I find it very slow and it does not pick up speed. I think it's a great car for a teenager or a new driver. I wouldn't say the ride is comfortable as it is very bouncy over the ruts in the ice. I don't slide around either I put some sand in the hatch and it is fine now. I plan on selling it soon as I want more power. Anyway it's a great car if you are prone to speeding tickets.
