1999 Chevrolet Corvette Z51 Sport Package 5.7L V8 gasoline from North America

Summary:

The best sports car for the money!

Faults:

Parking brake shoes – I think the previous owner drove with the parking brake on.

Rear differential leak – known problem. GM has a service fox for it.

Steering column lock – known problem. GM has a revised part for this.

General Comments:

I LOVE this vehicle!!! It does everything I ask for in a sports car. It is fast, handles & stops great, has great styling both inside and out, yet is comfortable and roomy enough to drive on a daily basis. The targa top is lightweight and easy to remove and install. I remove mine every time the sun is out! The hatch is HUGE and holds a lot of stuff (people look at me funny when I am buying groceries or at Home Depot with the car). It gets great gas mileage as well. I average 17-19mpg city and 28-30mpg highway, depending on how aggressive I have been driving. I drive my car on a daily basis.

I have owned it for 4 years and still love the car as much as I did when I bought it. I plan to keep this car long term and put at least 200K miles on it!

1999 Chevrolet Corvette Convertible 5.7 Liter V8 from North America

Summary:

Summer fun car, fairly reliable and a head-turner

Faults:

Steering column locked up when parked, but this was fixed on recall notice under warranty. Also have had numerous nagging electrical problems. Rear defroster stopped working because of bad connection. Drivers side power window/door lock buttons are working intermittently due too bad connection. Had bad fuel gauge that was fixed under warranty. Water leaking into drivers footwell upon heavy rain, fixed under warranty. Front brakes needed new pads at 35,000 miles, but rears were OK. Drivers seat was not securely fixed upon delivery (i.e. was rocking upon acceleration). Mainly small problems, but nothing major. The thing still runs great after 3.5 yrs and 40K+ miles. These vettes are fairly reliable as long as you don't rag on them too much.

General Comments:

Great Bose/Delco stereo. Head turner with the top down. Wonderful summer car. Tires are quite expensive. I paid $1,500 for 4 new EMTs. Next time I'll buy the non-EMT tires and take my chances with getting a flat, this will probably save me $700. Engine and tranny are SOLID and well-made. For a $50K car some of the quality esp in the interior is lacking. Seats are OK, but could be better. Insurance is a killer, I pay about $1,100 for 6 months and I have not had a ticket in 10 yrs. And that's with a $500 deductible! You can figure that all repairs on this car will cost you double what they would on a regular car. But it is worth it. I am very emotionally attached to mine and the women love it! I would buy another one. Decent gas mileage for a car with 350 bhp. I avg about 17-18 mpg in all-around driving. Highway you can eek out 25mpg if you stay around 65mph.

1999 Chevrolet Corvette Coupe 5.7L LS1 from North America

Summary:

Unbeatable performance for the price

Faults:

Steering column has locked up twice while parked. EMT tires are expensive (about $400 each). A little quiet for my taste.

General Comments:

This car is a truly amazing machine. This is Corvette #3 for me. My first two were an '85 and a '92. The '99 performs exceptionally well. Acceleration is heart-stopping. Handling is superb. Interior looks brand new after three years. ABSOLUTELY NO WEAR AND TEAR IN THE INTERIOR. Very comfortable for long trips as well. Superior sound system.

I desperately want to supercharge this thing, but blowers are a little tough to find for this car. Car responds well to upgrades, however. I think a shift kit is in order as well, but car shifts hard as it is. :)
