1985 Chevrolet S-10 2.5L 4 cylinder from North America

Summary:

Great truck, I would buy one again in a heartbeat!

Faults:

This truck was purchased new by my father. He gave it to me with 132,000 miles on it.

During this time, outside of a fuel pump, speedometer and clutch and a couple emissions components (all went out when this truck had 150,000 or more miles on it) it just had normal things wear out at normal intervals (starter, alternator, tires, brakes, etc.)

The odometer did stick for a few thousand miles, then suddenly start working again. Since the trip odometer had broken at this time, I have no idea the exact number of miles it was broken for, I would guess around 4000 miles were not accounted for.

This truck may not have been fancy, may have ridden rough and had pedals that were hard to push, but it was the most reliable vehicle I have ever owned (even with 150,000 and more miles on it).

1985 Chevrolet S-10 Durango 2.8 from North America

Summary:

It has been worth keeping all of these years

Faults:

Air conditioning quit working, but I believe this was my fault for not running it often.

Completely rebuilt the carbeurator, but it had about 175,000 miles on it.

Replaced water pump last year at around 170,000.

Door molding is loose on the driver side.

General Comments:

A most dependable truck in all types of weather & elevations.

Acceptable gas mileage & isn't burdened with a lot of electronics.

Performance is great with a 2.8 as it has been driven in the Rockies a number of times.

1985 Chevrolet S-10 2.8L V6 from North America

Summary:

Like the saying goes.. BIG things come in small packages!

Faults:

So far I have had very few problems with this truck, and the ones that I did have were minor.

The biggest problem that I had with this truck was the bottom seam on the drivers side door. Due to its age, the bottom seam rusted out completely making it hard to close the door, but a little bit of Bondo and a few sheet metal screws fixed that easily enough.

The only other problems that I have had with my truck were the back shocks that needed to be replaced and I had a couple of leaky valves... but once again the problems were easily corrected.

General Comments:

I bought this truck being a new driver, and having very little experience.

My main reason for buying this truck was the fact that I had driven my dads s-10 for a short time and I loved the truck... so when I saw mine up for sale I had to take it, and at 400 dollars it was an excellent deal!

1985 Chevrolet S-10 Long Bed 2.5 Liter Tech IV from North America

Summary:

A very strong truck, with great power

Faults:

I have had to replace the exhaust, of which was no simple task because almost all of the bolts were way beyond rusted.

I had to replace the points, distributor cap, plugs, and wires.

I had to replace the water pump, and main water pump seal.

I had to replace the fan belts.

General Comments:

This truck is very fast for a pickup-truck with a 6' bed, and a four cylinder 2.5 liter Tech IV. It will leave a 30 foot burn out if you rev the engine up to 3,000 RPMs and dump the clutch. That's not too bad seeing as how the engine has nearly 200,000 miles on it.

The steering wheel is a little low for my liking, it's like trying to fit a 6'1" tall man into a popcorn clown truck.

The truck bed squeaks a little bit, but that's easily fixed, and it's not a problem of GMs. It's just an old truck.

Nearly all of the weather seals are missing in this truck, I'm not sure if they rotted out, and the original owner just ripped them out, or if they just fell off.

This truck is very peppy on the freeway, mainly because third gear will push the truck (and accelerate) all the way to 65 before you have shift to fourth. When you shift into fourth gear, it's a very smooth riding truck, with excellent engine feedback.

1985 Chevrolet S-10 2WD 2.8 V6 from North America

Summary:

A reliable workhorse

Faults:

The timing chain went south at 170,000.

Radiator needs to be replaced.

Brake proportioning valve went bad.

Rear main seal replaced at 150,000.

Door seals shrunk.

General Comments:

This is a very durable and rugged truck. The performance and handling suffer badly though, the 2.8L engine is extremely durable and can pull just about anything, but for some reason it drinks gas like a V8 and it takes forever to reach the speed limit.

Handling is another serious problem with this truck, it has no sway bars so when you go through a turn it leans badly, which is very unsafe.

Until I had this vehicle I had been a Chevy hater due to my experience as a mechanic, but this truck has really changed my opinions, it has never let me down and has always done what was asked of it. Its reliability far outweighs its down-sides (what good do comfortable seats do you if your truck doesn't run?).

I recommend this truck to anyone who wants a reliable workhorse.

1985 Chevrolet S-10 Pickup 2.5L. 4 speed from North America

Faults:

Besides normal wear and tear, the only things we had to fix were the clutch plate and replace the e.g.r. valve.

That's not too bad for having 125K miles.

General Comments:

We live in Northern Minnesota and never had a problem starting this truck. Even through it never had a block heater.
