1996 Chevrolet Silverado from North America

Summary:

I will not keep this vehicle, too many costs involved with keeping it running

Faults:

My transmission went out at 75,000 miles.

My fuel pump has gone out 8 times in the last 30,000 miles.

The interior panels and dashboard have cracked or lost adhesiveness.

General Comments:

This truck rides very smooth, but it does not handle as well as expected. I bought the Chevy because of the supposed good name. I was disappointed with the lack of longevity on the mechanical and electrical systems.

You could've had dirt in the gas tank that was never taken out, or you might have had dirt in the fuel filter and never changed that when you changed the fuel pump. Dirt in the fuel filter will cause the fuel pump to work harder than what it should, and eventually over-work the motor and burn it out.

My 1996 Silverado has the 305, and it doesn't have any problems with the tranny, and just turned over 120,000 miles on it. I've pulled a car trailer with a vehicle on it no problem. It might have been a bad tranny that was put in when it was new.

1996 Chevrolet Silverado Ext. Cab 305 Vortec from North America

Summary:

Dependable, only had to repleace a few things with no major repairs

Faults:

Mileage are approximates: Alternator 105,000mi, water pump and starter 120,000mi, radiator 95,000mi, A seal on the transfer case where the drive line hooks up 80,000mi, and a new set of front break calipers a few months ago. Everything else works perfect.

General Comments:

I have put a 6 inch lift and 35 inch mud tires on this truck, warn winch, and abused it for years in the hills buried it in snow / mud up to the doors with no troubles, but no its not all dented up, I keep it washed and waxed. I have had this for over 7 years and never had to do any major work to it. I had drove this truck hard from time to time (I'm a lead foot) plus Ive hauled heavy loads of wood, towed boats, trailers, you name it. I was surprised with the power of this 305, I can smoke my 35's (done it once to see if I could). Doesn't burn oil, all the power stuff and A/C still works great, nothing leaks. I have heard of the auto transmission trouble, but the only thing so far is that it slips just a little going from 1st to 2nd gear, but only when I accelerate hard. I think this is a great truck and someday I hope to buy a Chevy Duramax.

Hey, loved the review, I own a Chevy too. Mine is just a simple 97 Chevy 1500 ex cab. Hope yours stays running strong.

Hey, mine is a 305 also. I was surprised by the power it puts out. Had problem with fuel pump after I first got it. Runs really well. It has 179,000 miles on it now. Push button 4 wheel drive. I keep it waxed at least 4 times a year. I really love this truck.

1996 Chevrolet Silverado LS 5.7 350 from North America

Summary:

An all around good truck

Faults:

I had to replace the water pump at 148,000 miles and the universal joint started to weat at 147,000 miles. The oxygen sensors started going bad at 150,000 miles and it caused the service engine soon light to come on. But that was simple to fix.

General Comments:

The Silverado is a all around good truck. I use it for everything. It will haul heavy loads and always has plenty of power on the road. The 350 has good response and a lot of torque. It gets decent gas mileage for a full size pick up. It has been the best truck I have ever owned. Little repairs have to start being made after about 130,000 miles. But nothing ever major happens unless you really abuse the truck. The interior is great on this model. It's very spacious and the seats are really comfortable.
