2002 Chrysler Intrepid V6 from North America

Summary:

Love it

Faults:

Engine light came on. My wife was driving it, and called me from 30 miles away. I told her to leave it off, and I went to look at it. I looked at it, it wasn't leaking oil, no noise, nothing seemed wrong. We drove it home, and I looked it up on line. I heard sooo many horror stories.

I went to Autozone to have them put it on the hand held computer. It read Vapor. All the problem was, was that the gas cap was worn out. I bought a new cap, and after about a few hours, the on-board computer recycled, and turned the light off.

General Comments:

I love the car. It handles great, gets good mileage, and I would probably by another one.

A ten dollar part fixed the problem, and the check-up was free. Can't complain.

2002 Chrysler Intrepid SE 2.7 from North America

Summary:

Bad engine, good car

Faults:

The engine light came on at about 130,000 km and kept coming on intermittently even after servicing. I changed to synthetic oil. The engine started to tick at about 135,000 km. Got louder and I took it in last month and they said the engine was sludged and the timing belt/tensioner were shot and very expensive to fix. There suggestion was to change to really light synthetic oil and have the sludge vacuumed out regularly.

General Comments:

Bought it for $10,000, so at $2000 a year depreciation, not out much but disappointed. The rest of the car is in very good shape. Ready to scrap instead of putting any major money into it. Too bad, nice looking, nice driving, lots of room and good interior. Should have got the bigger engine.

Hope Canada goes with the cash for clunkers program to get something for it in trade.

2002 Chrysler Intrepid SE 2.7 from North America

Summary:

I definitely will buy another one

Faults:

The oil light comes on after I run with my car (140km/h average) on 401 for 70 km, mostly in hot weather. I changed the oil regularly (12000 - yes twelve thou Km), only synthetic 5W30 and always flush the engine when I do the oil change (some engine detergent). Of course it's going to do that, the oil is very thin, and when idling the oil pump is not going to keep up, but after 10 minutes of running @ 80 km/hr, it's going off when idling to a stop. It is a physics law, that's all low pressure, because dropping from high rpm to 0 is going to create a vacuum effect in the engine, and the oil is all around the system, so no worries, try to run steady (the same speed) and don't turn off the engine until the fans are stopping, otherwise you will burn the oil faster.

General Comments:

The steering is a little too unstable under 100 km/hr, but after, especially around 135km/hr is o.k. At 140 km/hr the car is going to shake a little (engine going into resonance), but after is stable.

It's a shame the electronic limit is just a little below 180Km/hr. The 200 horses under the hood can go way more (even with 1300 Kg of car behind).

Otherwise the most comfortable and reliable car I ever drove (and there were few...)

2002 Chrysler Intrepid 2.5 from North America

Summary:

I have been happy with this car and the dealership service, but not with their prices

Faults:

Top end started rattling severely around 90k (dealership put this under drivetrain warranty).

Transmission electrical control module went bad and car would get jammed in second, requiring restarting the motor to reset. Dealership investigation uncovered additional tranny-related issues and it got quite expensive.

General Comments:

Very spacious and comfortable interior, huge trunk.

Modestly underpowered, and the 2.5L feels like it`s going to blow when it`s floored.

Handles well, but eats up tires, probably due to the wide wheel base and vehicle weight.

Given car's location (Quebec), it has withstood the tests of time very well, showing little rust and with the peripherals working consistently.

2002 Chrysler Intrepid ES 3.5L V6 from North America

Summary:

Quite literally, the best car I've owned

Faults:

Factory recall for a bolt that mounted driver's seat to floor; other than that, car is perfect.

General Comments:

The Intrepid has a great engine that makes it very easy to pass slower moving vehicles.

This car also handles beautifully. It's weight and larger wheel base make for dependable handling in inclement weather. Gives a very smooth and luxurious ride.

I find the interior to be very nice as well. Chrysler offered clean and professional colour matches between interiors and exteriors, presenting the Intrepid as a cross between a family sedan and a more luxurious vehicle.

I agree entirely. The only problem I've ever had (twice), is that the chip for the blowing motor speeds has conked out.

Otherwise a great year and a great car.

Two thumbs up :-)
