1974 Chrysler Lancer LA 1.4 petrol from Australia and New Zealand

Summary:

A WRX for the 70's!

Faults:

New clutch.

Carburettor rebuilt. Often jerks under throttle. Is a constant issue with the carburettor. However the car has been very reliable for nearly 40 years!

General Comments:

Dreadful handling in the wet... simply slides, regardless of tyres; motoring journalists remarked on this in the 70's. Handling good in the dry.

Powerful and torquey engine. Really fun to drive. Is stock standard except for 14 inch rims and tinted glass.

Heaps of room in the engine bay.

Mine is one of the first Lancers into Australia.

Good gearshift action. Although it is firm and requires deliberate movement.

3 round instruments in front of driver (one is for the clock, but should have been a tachometer given the performance).

Poor rear space/legroom compared to a Mazda 1300, for example.

High level standard equipment... radio, carpets, central roof mounted light and... adjustable steering! However the car is more expensive than some in the 70's.

Would you buy another car from this manufacturer? Yes
