1997 Citroen AX Spot 1.0i petrol from Croatia

Faults:

Gear linkage changed after 15 000km. No other problems yet (35 000km).

General Comments:

It is cheap and reliable car. The best car you can find for that money.

The problem could be the price of spare parts, but don't buy them at an authorized dealer.

It is nice to drive it, but it's slow when three or more people are in .

Oh yes, the brakes are too soft.

It's very economical (average: 100 km/5 lit.). I have it for three years and now I know I did the right thing by buying this car.

Also from Croatia; bought an AX spot a year ago. The previous owner did not take too much care about it, but I want him good-looking and healthy, and don't mind spending sometimes rather large amounts of money to do so. I simply love the little thing.

In the future, the plan is to change the engine with a more lively 1.1i TU1 Saxo engine with electronic fuel injection and a five-speed gearbox. A lot of work, I admit, but I like challenges. Anyway, good luck with your petit Citroen.

Faults:

Brakes, exhaust, handbrake, cigarette lighter.

General Comments:

Comfy inside, and looks nice from the front, but looks ugly from the rear, it looks too high.

Corners like a dog and constantly understeers, all in all a horrible car to drive, I wouldn't recommend one to anyone.

Maybe if you change down one gear you will notice that you can control cornering with your accelerator pedal and the car does not oversteer anymore.

In fact the AX is about the only car I am confident to drift through corners in normal traffic, because it is so controllable.

You have to know how to drive a front wheel drive car like this to enjoy it. No skill - no pleasure.

Faults:

Nothing yet.

General Comments:

A good car for the price, lots of understeer & body roll thru corners but fairly steady. Excellent fuel economy, bad handbrake as fails to hold well on steep banks. Good performance for a 1 litre, cheap insurance, overall a good car.

If you change down one gear you will notice you can control cornering with your accelerator pedal. Cornering a front wheel drive car in too high a gear can be dangerous because the car will understeer out of the corner. It takes skill to drive a car.

A very decent car for around town and to take you from A-B. It will reach about 90 if you give it time, but lacks power for overtaking and loses speed rapidly uphill.

Lots of under-steer.

I have just brought an AX Spree, good little first time car, sat on driveway for a month or so over Christmas with snow and frosts etc. but still after a month started first time no problem. Great little car and cheap insurance. Love it.
