2018 Citroen Relay 33 L2H1 BlueHDi 2.2 turbo diesel from UK and Ireland

Summary:

Good value for money

Faults:

Frequent AdBlue system failures, with warning lights that do not turn off and error messages.

Extreme care must be taken with the injectors because they can become stuck open and damage the rams.

Poor starting motor, especially in cold weather, often after 40,000 miles.

Oil leaks in the upper area and sleeve.

Problems with the heating; it struggles to get it very hot when it's very cold.

General Comments:

The Relay is a cheap van compared to the competition (Sprinter, Hiace, Daily, even the Trafic and the Transit), the chassis is the same as the Fiat Ducato and the Peugeot Boxer, and with the latter it shares the engines.

The L2H1 is a large, high-capacity van, popular for commercial use. It's easy to drive, especially in the city, as despite being quite spacious, it's not heavy (less than 7700 lbs). It doesn't have the annoying noises common in commercial vans, even on the highway. Spare parts are quite cheap and easy to find, even though PSA-Stellantis dealers are generally quite bad here in the UK (and that's being generous).

I haven't had it for very long, but luckily, in these years, there haven't been any major problems, except for minor electronic issues, as I mentioned before, which are normal in vehicles less than 10 years old. Since it's a commercial vehicle, I don't worry about those things as long as they're not serious enough to affect the van's operation.

This particular van, like its Fiat and Peugeot siblings, may not be the best on the market, but it is the most economical, which is why you see so many on the streets and many people use them to convert them into campers, especially because of their low price and because fuel consumption is really low for being one of the largest vans.

While many have had engine problems, fortunately mine is performing really well. It doesn't have high mileage, but it feels like it could go a long way without needing any work, electronic issues aside. It moves the vehicle quite well; even though it's only a 2.2L, it has 165 hp, which is more than enough for agility. You can drive normally at 90 mph or more without feeling any vibrations or strange noises, and it also has good stability and acceptable brakes.

Due to its very low fuel consumption and low maintenance costs, my experience with this van has exceeded my expectations so far. I hope it continues this way.

2014 Citroen Relay High Roof panel van LWB 2.2 HDi from UK and Ireland

Summary:

Huge van for the money

Faults:

Oil cooler, fuel pump, exhaust, rear suspension, broken interior plastics, etc.

Side sliding door rubber seal peeling away.

Van wouldn't start one morning - immobilizer issue. Had to call an auto electrician.

General Comments:

The size of this van is incredible. You won't get a more practical van than a Long Wheel Base Relay! Only downside is this makes city parking a pain.

Comfortable enough seats and a well designed dash. A little noisy on motorways. OK to drive.

2.2 HDi diesel manages 35 - 40 mpg even when loaded. Not fast but plenty of torque, feels strong even at maximum weight load.

Not the most reliable, had its issues but they were reasonable to fix. Better than the troublesome Citroen Dispatch we had before.

A good alternative to a larger model Ford Transit, Fiat Ducato, etc. Getting on now in age and miles, but we hope to keep this van running for business for a long time yet, keep them looked after and they are as reliable as anything really.
