1991 Citroen ZX Volcano 1.9 MPI from Poland

Summary:

ZX Volcano - sometimes you get more than you pay for.

Faults:

Flow-meter of an injection system failed which caused a bit 'rough' idling and some problems with adjusting a Liquid Petrol Gas installation.

Central locking remote control doesn't work.

Excessive wear of a front suspension (caused by horrible Polish roads I think)

General Comments:

Powerful engine - 122 HP. Great accelerate and top speed over 200 km/h!

Volcano with its lowered suspension looks much better than any BMW from early nineties.

Divine handling. In the corners ZX can easily drive 20 km/h faster than Golf or Escort not to mention 'spongy' Tipo.

ABS could be working a bit smoother.

Electrics (tail lamps especially) are not completely water proof. In heavy rain all the tail lights work together.

Comfortable and well finished interior. Velour seats and leather steering wheel seem to be even too much when compared with money one paid for that car.

1991 Citroen ZX Avantage 1.9 diesel from UK and Ireland

Summary:

Nice car - but be careful!

Faults:

Central Locking stopped working.

Clutch cable broke 3 times.

Sunroof, stopped sliding and would only tilt, also started to leak into interior light.

Indicators stopped working, had to have a replacement stalk switch.

Replacement gearbox required at 54,000miles - Clutch replaced at same time.

Clutch failed after only 200 miles, this was due to a faulty clutch plate supplied by local citroen dealer.

Rev counter stopped working.

Clutch failed again - this time due to release bearing failing.

Heater matrix stared to leak into passenger foot well.

General Comments:

I have owned this car for just over 6months and have done just over 6000 miles in it.

Unfortunately I seemed to have picked a bad one, a friend recommended the Citroen Z.X as he had owned 2 and never had any trouble. Sadly I seemed to have problem after problem with mine, however the car was well made inside, the driving position is good, visibility is good and it copes with motorway driving with ease. The engine is fantastic, by far the best diesel engine I have had in a car, it always start first time - every time, it is fairly quiet for a diesel and also has plenty of power. Fuel economy is good to, about 50mpg.

If you are thinking of buying a Z.X, make sure its been well looked after and well serviced, as I'm sure if you pick a good one you will be thrilled to bits with it.

Had similar problems with my z.x. my heater matrix also leaked, blowing water into my stereo! It was as a nightmare to repair.

I have also had problems with central locking, sunroof leaking, rev counter as well as my fair share of electrical problems too!

I bought a 1993 ZX Avantage petrol 2 years ago. It has passed 2 MOTs no problem, just 2 niggling faults. It's hard to start when hot, and when you put your foot down after the overrun, it misses and jerks as if engine has been switched off. There's also a leak in the hatchback which I cannot find.

I thought I was alone, I have had countless faults with my ZX diesel. Indicators stopped working, central locking would lock and unlock by itself (for no reason), clutch cable broken twice and now my wife gets wet feet when sitting in the passenger seat because the heater box is leaking. that's just what I can remember of the top of my head. Just seem to be throwing good money after bad at it.

My central locking also locks and unlocks itself.

I have bought a Citroen ZX only for the sunroof to stop working on me.

Does anyone know how I can shut it, as it is a bit open?

Also the central locking only works on the fob, and not on the key or by pushing the catch down when it shuts.

Can anyone give me some advice how I can sort the locks out?
