1996 Daewoo Racer GTi 1.5 petrol from Uruguay

Summary:

A sturdily built, reliable, no-nonsense vehicle, ideal for third world countries

Faults:

Rev counter failure at 5000 km, dealer refused to repair under warranty.

Boot light switch stuck, so battery ran down. 5000 km. Repaired free by dealer.

Head gasket blew at 150,000 km.

Driver's seat worn, metal frame broke and had to be welded. 150,000 km.

General Comments:

I live in a part of the country where roads are notoriously bad, with many pot-holes, ditches, etc. Very muddy in Winter, very dusty in Summer. The suspension of my Racer has stood up to everything - in fact still has original shock absorbers. Very reliable car, always starts first time, has been capable of getting through quite deeply flooded roads. Handling on the highway is good - suspension perhaps a little too soft for curves at speed, but have never felt car unstable. Car is quite nimble in traffic, but not heavy on petrol.
