1993 Daihatsu Applause 1.6 EFI from Australia and New Zealand

Summary:

Reliable, bullet proof motoring

Faults:

Nothing apart from fading red paint.

General Comments:

An incredibly solid, reliable and economical car. Nothing went wrong with it, felt extremely solid and sturdy.

Red paint was not up to Australian sun.

Apart from that, a fantastic car.

1993 Daihatsu Applause Xi 1.6L from Australia and New Zealand

Summary:

Reliable, till my death shall me and the Applause part

Faults:

I bought the car at 226,000k's and it was very good as it was owned by a lady, I had the car serviced and the mechanic didn't find anything wrong with the car.

Me being a young man, I've raced it a couple of times. I've blown the head gasket and the mechanic says it will cost 1100AUD to fix.

Other problems include:

Low idling in the early stages of driving, below 400rpm.

General Comments:

This car is very reliable despite the problems mentioned above. It's never broken down on me, it performs good, and I've hammered a few cars while racing. Even though with a blown head gasket, I cannot notice a reduction in performance, and I was still driving it up until tonight when my brother said not to.

The interior is like a dream - velour seats, immaculate all over, my paint is good.

1993 Daihatsu Applause Xi 1.6 from Netherlands

Summary:

Try and drive

Faults:

I never had serious problems with this car.

At long distances, the seats are not very comfortable.

General Comments:

The car looks like only boring or old people drive them, but it's like a wolf in sheep-skin, a nice car to drive.

With 105 hp and a warm motor you can easily accelerate from 0-100 km/h in 9,5 seconds, leaving a lot of sportive looking cars behind. Keep driving at high rpm (>3500 rpm) and listen to the nice sound of the motor.

Enough space for 5 adults.

Very cheap to buy, because of not-so-popular appearance. Reliable car.

Surprised that in your country this car is considered having non-popular appearance?

Maybe because in our area (Odessa city, former USSR) this is really rear car - 18 cars for 1,5 millions city and as consequence not everyone can say for the age of this model at all, this car is more stylish than lancers and civics of the same age, even 5-8 year younger.
