1996 Fiat Coupe 20v Turbo 2.0 turbo from UK and Ireland

Summary:

20v Turbo - Awesome

Faults:

The car smoked when idling; possible oil seals.

Rear suspension bushes (knocking in first gear).

Water leak (corroded pipes).

General Comments:

I didn't care what was wrong with the car, I fell in love with it.

The sound was awesome; it had a full stainless exhaust from the turbo back.

The car was good to drive, the boy racer bucket seats weren't the most comfortable seats in the world. I did a thousand miles in the car and that was the best car I've ever driven.

Yes, I would buy another one.

1996 Fiat Coupe 16v 2.0 16v from Australia and New Zealand

Summary:

Like an Italian model. Lovely to look at, but high maintenance

Faults:

Gearbox reconditioned.

Oil pressure gauge has its own ideas about what the pressure is.

Headlight adjustment motor seized.

Stepper motor (car keeps stalling).

Eats at least one rear light bulb per month. (I think this is a Fiat quirk, my old Uno did the same)

General Comments:

When it's working I love driving this car. Comfortable, quick enough (but not so much that my licence is in serious jeopardy), and smooth.

However, it does seem to like visiting the dealer regularly (who are, I must admit, very good-but they should be, parts are expensive)

Handling nice, but nothing like my Peugeot.

Did you purchase this car in Australia or import it directly from Europe. If so where abouts from and how much were import taxes etc?

Chances are he lives in New Zealand- the car was sold new there for about 5 years- there are plenty of examples kicking around.

1996 Fiat Coupe Turbo 16v 2.0 turbo from Japan

Summary:

Excellent, fun, reliable and cost-effective

Faults:

Nothing major. Front tires used to wear fairly quickly but top of the line Bridgestones seem to have fixed that.

General Comments:

The best car I have had for fun and looks -- Alfa 164 was perhaps more luxurious, but auto transmission loses out to the manual Fiat.

My previous car, after Alfa, was a BMW -- I dumped it 1 week after taking a test in the Coupe even though the BMW was less than 15 months old. It was THE worst car I have ever owned, the Fiat is probably the best or very near.

My dad bought a 330i sport a few years back with 230bhp. He kept it for 4 weeks and sold it as he was so disappointed with it. It didn't seem fast and was nothing special to drive - even the pedals were offset to the steering wheel. Steering was numb too. After he sold it he bough a 20 valve turbo plus Fiat, and it was better in every respect even the build quality wasn't far off. On top of this it was a lot cheaper.

BMW are over rated and over priced, as well as as having an image problem in the UK.

The Fiat Coupe was an in-house design by Chris Bangle, not Pininfarina.

1996 Fiat Coupe 20v Turbo 2.0 20v petrol turbo from UK and Ireland

Faults:

New ECU with much re-setting and fuss. The problem was engine cut out and poor idle when stationary.

Yes it does eat front tyres for breakfast. P-Zero are crap, F1 better.

General Comments:

Great car to look at and drive. The Turbo is calm and easy to drive around town and kicks hard and sounds great on the open road. Turbo lag not a problem 30-70 for over taking is the best. Hard to get away from junctions in the wet, 220 bhp is the problem but I won't moan. Very good value for money and resale value is excellent.
