1980 Ford Cortina L 1.6 petrol from UK and Ireland

Summary:

Very practical and versatile

Faults:

Cassette ejection button malfunctioned at 46,000 miles.

Head gasket blew at 52,000 miles.

Heater failed at 55,000 miles.

Clutch plate broke at 60,000 miles.

Gear selector mechanism broke at 63,000 miles.

General Comments:

The Cortina had a number of mechanical and electrical faults.

But it was still a very good car, considering its age and mileage.

I did get frustrated by high fuel bills and disappointing performance.

It proved itself a very practical family car thanks to its cavernous interior and boot space.

1980 Ford Cortina XL 4.1 from Australia and New Zealand

Summary:

A fantastic car. For its price range its a must buy.

Faults:

The engine got tired after about 10000 k's. It looked like it had been thrashed by the previous owner.

The auto trans lost reverse after 20000.

General Comments:

The car is just quick. For a standard car it pulls like there isn't a tomorrow.

The seats are very comfortable, and it is very nice to drive.

The car handles quite well, it beats most other cars its age, but slight body roll is its only downfall.

1980 Ford Cortina Basic 2.3 V6 from Poland

Summary:

My dream car

Faults:

Whole previous engine gone wrong - 1.3 in line 4. I've replaced it with 2.3 V6.

Water pump in 2.3.

General Comments:

Great car. I drive it because I wanted. Probably will drive Cortina for few more years (50 or something ;)

Huge engine and rear wheel drive gives you enormous joy while driving. Despite it's 24 years it's still comfortable and quiet. Only handling isn't best I've ever seen, but that is I think because of old rubber in front suspension.

1980 Ford Cortina GL 2.0, 4 cylinder from Australia and New Zealand

Summary:

A cheap, reliable and a very Good car

Faults:

I have had this car for 3 years. This was my first car.

Since then I have changed the Radiator because it was leaking, however I also found that the water level goes down very quickly - couldn't find the reason.

Ball Joint broke twice - if you get a Cortina, get it checked by a mechanic because its very dangerous to loose ur ball joint when you driving at 80 km/h. Cost about $80 AUD to fix anyway.

Alternator needed replacement after 20,000 km since my purchase.

Engine Seals were replaced probably because of me ramming too much. Now there are no exhaust smokes.

Starter motor, windscreen was also changed.

The common problems with Cortina is the Alternator light on the dash goes on sometimes, but do not worry its actually your fuses, give it a clean and you will be fine.

General Comments:

My Cortina has GOLD exterior. Leather interior. For a 22 years old car, it still looks good and goes hard. For only a 4-cylinder still got a bit a grunt. Goes pretty good. Wish I had the 6-cylinder though.

Although this car cost me tons, I still love this car.

This car is very reliable. The 4 - cylinder does not sound like a 4-cyl, it sounds like a V8.

I love it when the car Tilts to the right when I ram it hard from the torque of the engine (when the car is parked).

Cortina is Ford's one of best classical & vintage car.
