1999 Ford Falcon Forte 5.0 litre from Australia and New Zealand

Summary:

Reliable, quick, safe and economical for a five litre

Faults:

Gearbox went four weeks after buying it.

Needs another gearbox rebuild now after 120,000k.

Replaced radiator, and normal running gear, belts, plugs, suspension.

Also had new cam shaft and axles replaced after a major accident.

General Comments:

Drives well, amazing car still, after the k's I've clocked up, and also being in a major accident. It is quick off the line, has got me out of some near misses, uses less fuel than my six; recently done an 1800k trip, and used $100 less than a six.

The drive is still comfortable, one of the most reliable cars I've had. Upkeep has been minimal, if you keep a car serviced and replace parts before they are worn, you should get years out of them.

I swapped a new car for this V8 Ford Falcon 1999 model, and certainly have not regretted it. The only complaint is the interior could have been done a lot nicer.

1999 Ford Falcon Futura 4.0 petrol from Australia and New Zealand

Summary:

Beautiful engine that will run forever... shame about leaks, electrics and paint

Faults:

Paint badly faded, although the previous owner kept the car garaged.

Door seals leak.

Boot leaks.

Speedo failed at 160,000.

Electric aerial slow, loud and unreliable.

Radio controls stop working from time to time.

General Comments:

Never misses a beat, beautiful to drive - 12 year old car, and it drives like a new one!

However, it's a noisy drive, and even with seals being replaced, the boot still leaks every time it rains (causing mould and a horrible smell).

1999 Ford Falcon XR8 5.0 litre from Australia and New Zealand

Summary:

Top value sports cruiser with a great V8 sound track

Faults:

Only had the car for a month.

1. The electric window on the driver's side is starting to jump out of its tracks near the top of the window - spraying some silicone spray fixed it temporarily.

2. Petrol flap - doesn't open easily.

Some interior features are plastic and a little cheap.

Dark blue paint - is excellent condition, though it doesn't seem like the best paint was used.

General Comments:

Overall I'm very happy with the performance and handling of the AU XR8. The car weighs 1520 kg, which is not bad for a iron block V8 full size family car. The car doesn't handle or feel like a large car.

I paid 10K for a modified example; this great V8. The car is a 1 owner. The original owner replaced the exhaust: the car now has extractors + a 2 1/2 inch exhaust with high flow cats. Some head work has been done too. The car is easily pumping out over 200 kw now. The car has a beautiful burble - sounds like a true V8.

The seats are perfect. A lot more comfortable than my e36 328.

Insurance on these can be an issue; as soon as you mention modded exhaust and heads, insurance companies don't want to know you.

The 5 litre has oodles of low down torque and goes very hard.

Overall the car is a great buy for the money; it has all the creature comforts most people would want.

I have clocked up over 15,000 kms on the car and it hasn't missed a beat. The car is used as a daily driver and serviced every 10,000 kms.

I have recently purchased an xcal tuner (seen on Herrod) and had the car properly dyno tuned. Car is now more economical and the throttle response has improved dramatically. $1400 for the mod. Overall 10 kilowatts at the wheels and the car is now tuned to run on premium unleaded. The performance and economy gains out weighs the price rise in purchasing premium fuel.

1999 Ford Falcon AU XR6 4.0 petrol from Australia and New Zealand

Summary:

This model, you'll love it or hate it; I love it

Faults:

Boot (trunk) leaks, water gets in.

Back seat belts failed they would not return when tested, probably through lack of use.

Front seat belts replaced because the edge of the belts frayed.

General Comments:

Pros:

It is a comfortable car to drive.

Instant power at the tap of your foot.

Handles very well.

Economy considering it's a straight six isn't too bad.

Good for towing or play ;

Cons:

Considering the size of the car it isn't easy for a larger person to get in or out of.

Even more difficult for them to access the seatbelt latch.
