1982 Ford Granada L 2.0 Pinto from Sweden

Summary:

The one car that never failed me

Faults:

Starter motor went at 530000km, quick and easy fix.

Power steering sprung a leak; fixed with blood, sweat, tears and tape for now. Awaiting replacement.

Rear axle pinion is getting worn, making clunking noises when changing gears, still runs fine though.

Various leaks here and there - engine oil, power steering, brake fluid, rear axle... You name it, it's leaking. Nothing major though, just need to top it off every couple of months.

General Comments:

Most reliable car I've ever owned. It has never failed me (except when the starter motor went, which I forgive seeing how it was 32 years old and all).

A very roomy and comfortable car, with emphasis on comfortable; it gets you where you need to go at a reasonable price. It's old enough to avoid taxes here in Sweden and it only uses 0.8 liters of fuel per 10km - not bad for a 30+ year old 2 ton barge.

The 2.0 Pinto engine is pretty weak for a car this size, making it a bit sluggish at times, and I don't trust its 1600kg load rating for a second, but it runs and takes me to work and back again day after day. I use it as a daily driver, doing about 100km per day, and it never misses a beat!

1982 Ford Granada 2.0 petrol from UK and Ireland

Summary:

A good car

Faults:

I bought this black Granada from a friend who ran a scrapyard; he was going to weigh it in, but I thought it looked good enough to fix up. I bought it then discovered the hackney plate in the boot. Whoops...

Yes, it was an ex taxi. Good thing and a bad thing - good in that it's never still long enough for moisture to get trapped and cause rust, bad thing in that mechanically it'll be knackered. I ended up changing the gearbox and the cylinder head; after that it was fine.

General Comments:

A big comfy wallowy old rear drive barge. Not the disaster you would expect with a relatively small engine in such a big car, it pulled quite well and never missed a beat despite the huge mileage. Buy one now before the banger racers make them totally extinct, like they have with the mk1 Granada.

This was a basic L model with little frills, nonetheless a good car.

1982 Ford Granada L 3.8 V-6 from North America

Summary:

An inexpensive utility car you don't have to worry about being stolen!

Faults:

Original water pump failed @ 109,000 miles.

Carburetor needs a rebuild.

Cloth seats worn.

Minor structural rust.

General Comments:

Fairly comfortable with a flight bench seat; the split bench in my old '81 was better.

The 232 V-6 easily outperforms the 200 inline-6, but the big 2-bbl carb uses gas like a small-block V-8.

Easy to drive, parts are cheap, and these Fox-platform cars break infrequently. They like to rust, but are inexpensive and reliable.

Plenty of cargo room for a compact wagon, and good passenger space for four people; six could squeeze in if needed :o

1982 Ford Granada from North America

Summary:

The perfect first car

Faults:

Tires needed to be replaced.

Starter went, but was cheap to fix.

Engine seized, but this was my fault for not putting oil in it on a long road trip.

General Comments:

I absolutely loved my Granada. It was my first car, bought with low mileage and the original stereo, and it was the perfect first car. It did have some trouble around sharp turns, but what big old boat doesn't?

The front seat was a bench seat so however close my seat was to the steering wheel was where my passenger had to sit. But the Granada was roomy so this usually wasn't a problem.

The only reason the car died was because it was my first car and nobody told me you had to put oil in it. I loved that car so much, I cried the day we donated it to the Kidney Foundation.

I feel your pain. The same thing happened to me when my grandmother gave me her '86 Chevrolet Monte Carlo Sport Coupe and then I gave it to my cousin who needed a car. He completely trashed it and didn't even tell me thank you for giving to him. Life goes on though.

Summary:

Brand new Granada!

Faults:

Brake discs (easy to change) and front springs. Power steering leaks oil.

General Comments:

Comfortable and very nice car, which has not enough grip on fast cornering :(

The only thing missing is that it has no A/C.
