1996 Ford Ka from UK and Ireland

Faults:

I have just taken the car in today, but the gears keep sticking. First time it happened I was stuck in traffic and no matter how hard I pushed down on the clutch, it would not go into first or second at all! So I had to pull away into a lay by in 3rd gear!! I told my partner, and obviously me being a woman, he assumed it was me and left it. 2 weeks later it happened to him when he was driving and it got stuck in 5th and then again in neutral!! Then he believed me!! Ha!

I'm not sure whether this is a sign that the clutch is slipping or if I need a new gear box??? Can anyone shed any light???

1996 Ford Ka 2 1.3 from UK and Ireland

Summary:

Absolute crap

Faults:

The steering column universal joint seized.

The speedometer mechanism failed.

The suspension went solid.

Corrosion was all over the place, and we do not live near the sea!

General Comments:

Ford did not want to know about the faults as they said they should be expected from a car of this age; when it was only two years old?

I totally sympathise with you, my wife has a 1999 ford ka and the rust on this car is unreal. I have never known a car to deteriorate as fast as this, we have had problem after problem like passenger side footwell water leak, spark plug snapping into head (common fault),windscreen wiper motor burnt out door handles snapping etc, etc, etc.I have had a guts full of the main dealers they are not interested in the least, once they've got your money bugger off as far as they are concerned. No more fords for us I'd rather walk.

1996 Ford Ka 1 1.3 petrol from UK and Ireland

Summary:

Disappointing

Faults:

Rear silencer fell off.

Recent service cost £450 - needed new discs & pads, £52 labour to fit a headlamp bulb (due to lack of access the complete headlamp unit needed to be removed).

Spark plug rusted in.

Currently the idling sensor is faulty.

General Comments:

Running costs and the petrol consumption is higher than I imagined.

1996 Ford Ka 1 1.4 petrol from UK and Ireland

Faults:

Steers to the side unless you have a fat chick sitting in the passenger seat.

General Comments:

Seems to have plenty of room in the back until you try to move. Pretty good performance for a 1.4 (especially a Ford one). Ford dealers/service staff once again proved themselves clueless.

I think you'll find the Ka has a 1.3 engine...

Shouldn't steer to the side, but then I've driven a fair few of these car having spent a previous life in the motor trade. Loads of them were ex-learner or ex-hire cars, and as a result, plenty have been bumped. Easily sorted though - just steer in the opposite direction a bit!

1996 Ford Ka 2 1.3 petrol from UK and Ireland

Faults:

Nothing whatsoever has gone wrong with car in the 24,000 miles covered since new.

Original dealership ok but take it to a more convenient dealer near work for servicing. Servicing seems ok but they don't clean the car afterwards and ignored a note left in the service schedule about a squeeking clutch pedal.

General Comments:

Although I am about to change my car it is not a reflection on the car itself. I am trading up to a Mazda MX5.

This has been a great little car to drive especially after about six months when there were more of them on the road and I stopped being stared at all the time !
