2014 Ford Mondeo Zetec 2.0 TDCi from UK and Ireland

Summary:

Never again

Faults:

DPF, clutch, flywheel, driveshaft, oil leak, coolant leak, brake grind, injectors, door seal leaks, electronic issues (key fob); the list goes on.

Rust starting at door sill.

General Comments:

2014 Mondeo, a fine car when running correctly, smooth, comfortable, good looking, nice to drive, and a steady 45 - 50 mpg.

But pray you buy a nice one. My car looked OK when I bought it, but had clearly been abused.

Would not trust a nice one still however - talking to local taxi drivers, the problems I had were fairly common unfortunately.

Traded it last year for a much better car (Skoda Octavia) and I am unlikely to return to Ford.

2014 Ford Mondeo Titanium 2.0 TDCi from UK and Ireland

Summary:

OK

Faults:

Clutch, flywheel, DPF, oil leak, EGR valve, injectors, etc.

Electronics caused a bit of a headache also.

General Comments:

We used this as a taxi in our firm a while ago. The Mondeo of this generation is a great car - lovely to drive and economical, plus plenty of space.

Looks good in black, the Titanium model is near top of the range.

Running costs were a bit much however. The car suffered from the usual diesel troubles as the age and mileage rose.

For the private buyer we recommend only low mileage cars from this time. Avoid high mileage diesels unless there is evidence of a lot of work done.

2014 Ford Mondeo Graphite 2.0 TDCi from UK and Ireland

Summary:

Undecided

Faults:

Appeared to be a looked after car when purchased - full history with cam-belt change and all oil changes and a fresh MOT. Lately however there is oil leaking from the gearbox and a rattle, and an injector needed change at over £500!! The car was running rough and I had to take it to a diesel specialist. There is more problems also, but too depressing to think about!

General Comments:

Had to buy my first big family car as I needed more space. The Mondeo was a fantastic choice - great looking car inside and out, stunning to drive - punchy engine and fairly economical. Great seats, loads of space.

Graphite is a pretty basic model, but still had a nice interior and electrics. Love the look of the car on the outside, also in dark blue with window tints and alloy wheels.

Was great the first year or so I had it, but in the last year the troubles have shown up and have been expensive - a lot of people advised me to go with petrol, but I couldn't live with 35 mpg, I needed at least 45 mpg or more. As it turns out though I am spending all the money I save on fuel on repairs!

I hope this car lasts once the expensive issues are fixed. I want to like it more, but it's just been unreliable as of late. The car has caused me more problems in two years than my old petrol Corsa ever did in ten years! Not exclusive to the Mondeo to be fair - My mates told me to avoid modern diesels as they are all like this apparently, and when I told them about all this I got a big "Told ya so".

Can confirm Ford's petrol engines of the same era are much better.

I do know a taxi driver with your exact car and engine, he says he got 200,000 miles with not as much trouble, the key is to give them a long drive, and use quality fuel and oil (avoid the supermarket cheap stuff) and you should find the car more reliable.

Your gearbox issue however isn't such a common one, unless it could just be the DMF rattling and that needs changed (expensive anyway), but I have heard of some of these gearboxes failing early unfortunately.

Actually the standard (non turbo) petrol engines are fine, but the EcoBoost petrol engines suffer from turbo and cooling issues.

As for diesel, the reviewer's experience is all too typical of modern diesel issues, not exclusive to Ford to be fair.
