Summary:

The car is Garbage

Faults:

The car idled way to high so I could not pass emissions without major repairs.

The starter is a constant problem.

Constant electrical problems since I have had it.

The car burns oil which makes it smoke at red lights.

General Comments:

The car is comfortable and although it is an old car it should work better than this, electrical problems are very expensive and that is a constant with this car.

The starter is always a problem when it fails to catch fire. I walk to the car everyday afraid it will not start up. Not good for a college student like myself.

It is fairly comfortable inside, but if you are like me you do not know much about cars. I have never spent so much time under a hood in my life.

Summary:

A spare time driving project

Faults:

The most irritating problem occured after the transmission was replaced at 90,000 miles. Somehow the mechanics messed up the wiring harness for the engine. I replaced the central computer as well as all the engine sensors and the car still won't pass in. The car is really hard to start and for the first 5 to 7 minutes I have to hold my foot on the gas pedal to keep it running. I think once I replace the wiring harness the car will run like it should.

General Comments:

It has a very comfortable ride, and the interior is very durable. I have two german shepherds that ride with me everywhere I go and their claws haven't damaged the rear seat yet.

I don't think I would recomend the car to anyone who wasn't a mechanic of some sort, since keeping the car going is a bit of a chore. I have saved a lot of money by doing my own work, and I still have a lot of things to do on the car yet.

Wow! You're the first person I've read about who owned the 2.5 four-cylinder. I think that's the same engine Ford put in the Tempo. What a lousy engine that is! And to imagine it in a car even bigger than the Tempo boggles the mind.

Did you reset the computer after you changed all the sensors? just remove the + cable from the battery for a couple of minutes and reconect.

I had the same problem, and this worked out for me.

Hope it helps.

Ford actually used a 2.3 liter four cylinder in the Tempo, which was basically a shortened 200 cubic inch six-cylinder with two cylinders cut off.

Faults:

Brakes wear quickly, constant electrical problems, steering column locked up twice - I have had this car two years and have towed it six times. Compared to the other 8 cars I have owned, this is a piece of wheat.

147,000mi. Previous owners may have not taken good care of it. Expensive to repair and service. Even the fan belt is $60 from the dealer. Just for the part.

Good luck. Don't buy a Ford. This one and the Tempo were crap. I had a Fiesta which was OK.

1987 Ford Taurus GL Wagon 3.0 from North America

Comfort marks 7 / 10
Dealer Service marks 3 / 10
Running Costs (higher is cheaper) 1 / 10

Faults:

Brakes and rotors many, many times.

Heater core.

Radiator three times.

Transimission once (good for a Taurus, changed the fluid regularly - 30,000 miles).

Motor mounts.

CV joints.

A/C compressor. A/C constantly leaks, after numerous o-ring changes.

Power steering and oil leaks.

The cooling system is trash, I can't keep water or anti-freeze in the car. Just replaced head gaskets which apparently have been leaking coolant for years. Repair manual says design flaw.

Water pump.

Ignition module.

All my friends replaced their trannys very early on. One blew an engine at 39,000 miles.

General Comments:

I do like the way the car drives, when it's running OK. Can't afford to sell because it is worthless. Drives better than it runs. If I weren't a good mechanic the car would have disappeared long, long ago. I genuinely feel sorry for anyone I see driving a Taurus. Don't fall for Ford's hype, the car is junk, built and designed with inferior materials and design flaws.

I happen to like my 1987 Taurus with 164,000 miles on it. The only thing that I replaced was wear out parts: brakes, tires, tune up parts. I never had to have any major work done yet.

On trips if I keep the speed about 62-65, I get about 40 to 43 miles to the gallon without the air on. With the air on I get about 35-37 miles to the gallon. I change the oil every 3000 miles and the tranny every 12000 miles.
