Transmission died twice in the one year I had it.
So we figured this would be a good fix-em-up opportunity, because when we first bought it, it had multiple problems, for example the motor mounts, the brakes, exhaust, and of course, the transmission among other things.
We finally got it drivable, everything seemed fine, except the transmission made a rattling noise when coming out of a stop. It was about that time when I found this was going to be a birthday present for me. I got it about a week and a half early, and told not to let the transmission bother me, as it "should" last a good six months to a year. Sure enough, it didn't even last until my birthday, coming out of a stop was much worse; instead of making a rattling sound, the whole car would just shake, then it would just grind and not get into gear.
Anyway, we had the transmission fixed, and it was running just fine, however about a few months later, the air conditioner gave away in the most obscure way: I was driving down a highway doing about 70 miles per hour, when the windshield got a bit fogged up. I turned on the defrost to get rid of it, but all I got was a face full of smoke. So, I had to drive that fast blindly until I could get my window down and drive like Ace Ventura, but this could have caused a serious accident.
Back to the transmission, it just gave out again last week, and left me stranded out in the middle of Bums ville, Texas. Needless to say I got no warning; no lights, no gages, nothing. Now the people who originally fixed it want to charge another arm and leg for it, so I'm stuck without a car right now.
I have a 3.8 taurus also and had the same problem with my a/c. I was driving down a highway and the windows suddenly and completely fogged over. took it to a shop and it turned out to be the heater core. took around $500 to fix. that was just the begining. with all the problems I've had with my car, I will never get another Ford again.
I have a 94 Taurus and it has 150,000 miles and this is the car's 4th transmission. My dad had the bright idea of buying this car and then giving it to me. Well I can't afford a new car so I have to keep fixing this piece of junk. This is the second time we've had a problem with Taurus transmissions. My dad didn't learn his lesson the first time with our 1989 Taurus. These cars are junk and I wouldn't recommend them to anyone. Ride your bike before driving this junk pile.
I also had a 1994 Taurus GL. These are pieces of junk!!! When I bought mine as a 5 year car (at that time) 9k miles later, transmission (what Ford is famous for doing) gave up completely.
Fixed it. Then I had an oil leak. Mechanic tells me it's the crankshaft seal on the transmission side of engine. Trans needs to be removed to get to it. I decided to just live with oil leak.
I had a problems with the power window switch. Doesn't work. I later sold this car to a co worker. Later he told me that transmission died again. After he fixed it, the engine decided to give way too.
I WILL NEVER BUY FORD AGAIN!! I lost a lot of money because of Ford quality. Not ONLY THAT, I had nothing but people telling me how crappy Ford is (and VERY VERY seldom have I received any kind of compliments). MAN were they right!! Buy a Honda or Toyota instead! At least you don't have to worry about ANYBODY telling you bad things about your Honda or Toyota etc. You'll get mostly ALL compliments about these better made cars.
I have a 1994 Taurus GL wagon, it has 225,000km on it and the only thing to ever go wrong was the power window on the rear drivers side... fixed it for about $5. You guys must have got lemons.
P.S Funniest thing is I'd never buy a Honda or Toyota for the same reasons why that last guy doesn't want to buy a Ford. Never had a Japanese car work properly for me. Maybe they just don't like me.
I bought a 94 for Taurus second hand. I like Fords but I hate this car. I have already replaced the a/c on it, idler pulley, radiator, both rear springs and struts, passenger side front spring and strut, and now working on replacing the motor mounts. This has to be one of the worst vehicles I have ever owned.
