1996 Ford Windstar GL 3.8 from North America

Summary:

A competent family member

Faults:

Speedometer stopped registering at about 110,000.

General Comments:

My Windstar has been a very competent, comfortable and solid performer.

The engine is responsive and powerful.

The brakes are excellent.

The ride comfort is reassuring.

It's almost seven years old and we've not experienced any significant problems.

Only after 100,000 miles is it really showing its age. My Windstar has performed way past my expectations.

But, I will say that the local dealership has been totally inept at resolving simple problems over the years.

1996 Ford Windstar LX 3.8 Gas from North America

Summary:

Second to the worst car I have ever owned

Faults:

Regular problem with warped front brake rotors.

Replaced Head Gaskets at 71k miles.

Torque converter failed at about 65k miles.

Brake ABS unit failed at 85k miles.

Transmission leaking at 85k miles.

General Comments:

This van has been a good vehicle as far a size goes, but reliability has been terrible.

The dealer service from two different dealers has been bad. One dealer left the steering linkage half undone after transmission work. Another dealer couldn't find a PVC hose that was disconnected.

I am going to trade it in on something other than a Ford.

Had there ever been a leak in the right side brake pipe? Just this week the car started smoking under the hood when I pressed the brake pedal with an acrid smoke that singed my nose hairs.

1996 Ford Windstar GL 3.8 V6 from North America

Summary:

If you like to walk, buy a1996 windstar

Faults:

When we first bought the windstar, the speedometer stared bouncing. After about a year it started cutting off when you backed up and went forward. You had to keep one foot on the gas and one on the brake. Then steam started rolling out of the tailpipe. The problem was a blown intake manifold gasket. This ran me about $600.I got a good deal on the repairs because the person who worked on it was a good friend of my dad. Now the engine needs to be rebuilt and this time it will not cheap. I am probably better off trading this headache for a Chevy or a Mazda. I lost a lot of trust in Ford. My very first car was a 1967 mustang fastback. I never thought that I would have problems like this with Ford.

General Comments:

The comfort of the windstar is great.

However, it would be a better automobile if it had a small V-8 in it.

1996 Ford Windstar LX 3.8L from North America

Summary:

A piece of junk

Faults:

I brought this van used. I trusted Ford to have good quality used vehicles. I had purchased a brand new Mitsubishi Mirage and it was totaled and I feared buying a new vehicle. I never had a days problem with my Mirage.

The first day out in the Wind star, the check engine light came on. A hose needed to be replaced.

The following week, the windows in the back wouldn't open. New motors were put in.

A month later, the fuel pump system had to be replaced at a cost of over $500.00.

Transmission needed repairs.

Check engine light constantly on and off, no problem can be found.

General Comments:

The van is a nice size and very comfortable, but the problems make it a piece of junk. Ford should be ashamed to make a family vehicle like this and claim it's reliable and safe.

I would never buy another Ford vehicle again and as soon as I finish paying off this vehicle it's gone. I'll stick with foreign cars.

Dear Steven If you like foreign cars so well why don't you just move there and get a bicycle like the rest of them and then all will be well. That car was built by Americans and if you bought a lemon oh well the foreign guys make those real well to. your just putting money into the communists pockets and don't even know it. I hope your happy.
