1991 GMC Safari EXT review from North America
"Great Reliable Van"
What things have gone wrong with the car?
Normal Wear and Tear items... exhaust replaced twice, 2 batteries, 3 sets of brakes, gas tank, 3 sets of tires, water pump, brake lines, 2 alternators, set of shocks, tune up every 4 years.
That may seem like a lot of items, but remember that is over 16 years.
General comments?
This has been a GREAT van. Never a problem with the engine or transmission, although the oil pan is starting to rust and it's now dripping a bit of oil.
Added a transmission cooler the first summer and have been towing trailers with it ever since... never a problem.
The area under the doors, and all along the bottom have some serious rust... we're talking holes now. I've been patching it up and spot painting for the last 4 years or so. If I get another year out of it, I'll be a happy camper.
It still rides great. The radio still works. It always starts even in Ottawa winters (-40C). The only thing that has given up the ghost is the air conditioning at about the 12 year mark and I haven't had it fixed.
Overall, it's been a great van. It's a shame GM stopped making them.
