1992 GMC Typhoon from North America

Faults:

Normal things, nothing out of character.

General Comments:

I have acquired this fabulous vehicle since my Father's death in December, and am having difficulty locating a rear driveshaft for it. Other than that, it has been quite an awesome vehicle. If they made them again, I'd have one! It has proven to be one very quick, sturdy, strong vehicle! Thanks for any input.

1991 GMC Typhoon Syclone 4.3L turbo from North America

Summary:

Sleeper's dream

Faults:

Water pump went at 25,550 miles.

Transmission mounts replaced after purchased; no problems with them; just replaced with better brand.

General Comments:

Syclone; not Typhoon. Tough to find in good condition, but great truck. It's quick, handles great, and drives normally until you put your foot down. It's a gas guzzler. The interior looks just like any other Sonoma, except for the gauges, which include a very unreliable boost gauge. Truck is totally stock, and I'll probably leave it that way.

1992 GMC Typhoon 4.3 turbo V6 from North America

Summary:

The best GM vehicle ever

Faults:

I've only had one problem with my Ty since I got it. The ECU shorted out and I had to get a new one.

The Alternator had to be replaced too, but that's to be expected it's 12 years old.

General Comments:

The Typhoon, even though built only in 92 and 93 is still to date one of the fastest production vehicles ever made. Definately the fastest SUV. I live in Alaska and most people drive trucks here and they all think their truck is the fastest thing on the road. That is until they get a taste of the typhoon. It's a total sleeper 98% of people have no idea what it is until I explain it to em. This thing is a blast to drive and a joy to own. If you get a chance I definitely recommend buying one. It's nice knowing you can pretty much smoke anything on the road.

That's eerily similar to my Typhoon. Those are the only two problems I've had as well. My ECU shorted out about 2 years ago and I'm getting my alternator fixed today (12 years old). Otherwise, it's been a very dependable sleeper than can sneak up and squash a Mustang.

1993 GMC Typhoon 4.3 turbo from North America

Summary:

Awesome

Faults:

I had a few touch ups on the truck at first. The previous owner didn't really know what he was doing so fixed all the little things that were wrong and it is an every day driver.

General Comments:

I will try to put this in a few words.

Fast, comfortable, reliable, sport utility vehicle.

1993 GMC Typhoon 4.3L Turbocharged V6 from North America

Summary:

A lot like a girlfriend - takes a lot of money to keep going, but when she puts out... man oh man!

Faults:

Developed somewhat severe knock retard at around 50,000 miles.

Used as a daily driver, it is beginning to rust under cladding.

Stock air duct cracked on both ends, GM discontinued the part so I had to hunt one down.

General Comments:

I dreamed of owning a Typhoon for years. Turbocharged to 15psi, full time all-wheel drive, 285 horses with over 400 foot/pounds of torque, this is a dream machine. A sport utility that can out-accelerate and out-perform most sports cars, this limited run truck is an absolute blast to drive. I have every intention of keeping this truck for many many years, with hopes of adding its older pickup brother, the Syclone, as well as possibly a second Ty, to my lot.

I love the Ty, but where did you get a figure of over 400 ft/lbs of torque? I'm guessing the truck is stock because you only said 285 horses, but there's about 350 ft/lbs of torque in the typhoon. Just thought you should know.

As a typhoon owner, I can state that the stock truck power rating is 285hp and 360ft/lbs of torque. The SY/Ty homepage is also a great place to learn about these rare trucks. I hope I have helped.
