1987 Honda Civic DX Hatchback 1.5L from North America

Summary:

Reliable when the parts are all working

Faults:

When I first bought the Civic, it was horrible. The car had bad bearings and a sticky transmission. Now the tie rods on the car are pretty shoddy, the car often pulls hard to the right when driving faster than 50 mph. But the whole point for me was to attain the car for the shell. I was planning to put a ZC motor and a turbo kit on it. Raising the HP from a muscular 95 to a not bad 210 HP.

General Comments:

Parts on this car are pretty cheap. Almost every part is attainable through the junk yard at almost 70% cheaper than at a Honda dealership.

I had one as my first car too. Excellent little car, bought it with 100K on the clock and did 50K without any problems what so ever.

It is a docile car at low speed and revs, quiet and smooth, but after 4000rpm the sound changes and it really does pull as the second carb kicks in. I left boy racers at the lights many a time, scratching their heads wondering what the hell I had under the bonnet.. great fun.

1987 Honda Civic Sedan 1.5 carburated 4 cylinder from North America

Summary:

Reliable and cheap to operate only if you know how to fix the car yourself

Faults:

I've had clutch replaced, carburator, CV axles, brakes, water pump, and more...

It's very reliable, it keeps going and going without a break down. Now, it's running really noisy, I have either 1 or 2 bad valves that are making clattering noises, but still runs, as long I keep changing oil to slow down the wear. My transmission is making a little noises, bearings are starting to go in the transmission. It still keeps going though. It will be another several thousand of miles till the tranny goes out.

General Comments:

I like the little car, it has good gas mileage and comfortable for long trips, however I hate the lack of acceleration. The carburator keeps quitting on me. It's just crappy carburator. It's actually a California emission control system, there's tons of hoses and crap in there.
