1987 Honda Integra SX16 1.6 D16A3 from Australia and New Zealand

Summary:

If you find one in nice shape, don't discount it based on age. Still awesome cars!

Faults:

I bought my 1st gen Integra in a neglected state for a low price. So far, I have changed:

- Timing belt.

- Water pump.

- Thermostat.

- Air, oil & fuel filters.

- Spark plugs & wires.

- All fluids.

And it now runs and drives great. I have yet to do the driveshafts and replace the tyres, which it also needs. These cars have an excellent reputation for reliability; mine was just behind on some normal maintenance.

General Comments:

Looks nice for an older car. Nice performance and road manners on par with 1990s / early 2000s models I have owned. The fuel injected 1.6 is rev-happy and pulls well. Will sit at 110-120km/h without issues. Fuel economy is around 8L/100km.

Has 4 wheel disc brakes and torsion bar front end... nice handling for an older car.

Has zero emphasis on safety features. Parts are still cheap and readily available here in Australia.

1987 Honda Integra SX16 1.6 PGM-FI from Australia and New Zealand

Summary:

In a word... Classic

Faults:

Have had constant problems with keeping the idle constant due to water controlled idle.

Replaced hoses, thermostat, radiator flushed.

Alternator rebuilt at 258,000km.

Wheel bearing replaced at 238,000km.

General Comments:

Other than the problems with keeping the idle right this car has been fantastic for a car with its mileage. Have travelled more than 30,000km in less than one year. Car has looks that are timeless and is a true classic of its time. Good performance, lovely gearbox and sharp handling. Nicely laid out dash and controls and very comfortable seats that also look the part.

I bought a Honda Integra 1987 recently. When I start the car, the automatic transmission works only in fist gear. After 10 minutes (always after 10), the transmission starts to work perfectly. Any suggestions?

The automatic transmission on my 1988 Integra is a bit dodgy at start-up as well. I can drive normally (all gears), but the car only revs to a maximum of 3000RPM. It's possibly a way of stopping damage to the transmission. When it is warm it runs and shifts correctly. (Approx. 5 minutes of driving)

Possibly your transmission might be on the way out and you might have to replace it, but I would get it checked by a professional or serviced by Honda (if you can afford it, $450AU Dollars for transmission fluid, filter and a few adjustments, what a rip!).

1987 Honda Integra SX16 1.6 PGM-FI from Australia and New Zealand

Summary:

A classic Honda which still looks sharp today

Faults:

Constant problems keeping idle right. Idles from between 750rpm and 1500rpm.

Replaced water hoses, thermostat, thermostat housing and radiator rebuilt.

Alternator rebuilt at 250,000km.

Wheel bearing replaced at 238,000km.

General Comments:

Great car in its time, but starting to show its age now.

The fact that idle is controlled by water really is not a great idea.

Good performance and fantastic gearbox.

Excellent handling although rides hard.

Nice seats and modern interior for a car of its age.

1987 Honda Integra DX 1.5 from UK and Ireland

Summary:

Nice, reliable, practical old car

Faults:

Nothing.

General Comments:

Considering the age of my Integra it was very reliable, and was also well built.

It looked rather smart, although because in was the DX model it was rather basic.

It performed well for a 1.5 liter engine in a compact/mid-size car. It handled well too.

On the down side, it didn't have power steering so the steering was HEAVY! Also, the engine was rather noisy.

My car had a horrible blue interior.

Overall though, a very good car, especially for the £500 I paid!
