1998 Hyundai Elantra Station Wagon 1.8 16V DOC from North America

Summary:

A great little runabout, solid and reliable

Faults:

Faulty coolant temperature sensor, causing a high idle, finally fixed by the dealer after three attempts.

Faulty spark plug wires, causing a slight misfire, replaced by the dealer.

All work was done under warranty.

General Comments:

Build quality as good as any of the Japanese auto makers.

The engine loves to rev and makes good power above 3K.

Cheesy cup holders and uncomfortable seats.

It's been a great little runabout, solid and reliable, but the dealer service in my part of the world leaves much to be desired. I'm only grateful I didn't need them for any major repairs.

1998 Hyundai Elantra 1.8 from North America

Faults:

At 70mph, the engine periodically shuts down, then mysteriously restarts. Dealer has yet to figure this problem out after 3 attempts.

Seats squeak nastily.

Trip odometer broke.

Driver's side door lock broke.

Really bad tires, had to replace at 24,000 miles.

Power steering fluid pump broke at 18,000 miles.

Arguably the worst car I've ever owned, and that includes my first car: AMC/Renault Alliance 1983, I got 165,000 miles out of that car, this one will be lucky to survive to 80,000.

Cheers,

General Comments:

Nice styling, relatively comfortable. Don't believe everything you hear about the warranty.

I agree on the warranty 100%. We had to pay extra for it, and it still doesn't cover much. The reason we BOUGHT the car in the first place was the warranty, and none of our problems have been covered.

Also, the passenger side window doesn't roll up properly, and the driver's side door handle (inside) broke. I love rolling down the window to open my door. No better way to impress friends.

1998 Hyundai Elantra GLS 1.8 Auto from Venezuela

Faults:

46.000 km at this time and only the electrical cooling fan went out. It was changed under guarantee (40.000 km).

The dealers in Venezuela are less than zero. Things such the AT Filter should be about overseas.

General Comments:

This is an excellent car. Besides the dealers attention in Venezuela.
