1999 Hyundai Lantra 1.8 litre from Australia and New Zealand

Summary:

A small reliable car, if a bit heavy on fuel

Faults:

A component of the driver's side electric window motor snapped, and had to be replaced at cost. (September 04).

Remote key less entry/central locking mechanism stopped working for no apparent reason. (July 04).

General Comments:

This car is very reliable, and has always started when I turned the key. When I first bought the car I did not treat it very well, and drove it very hard and rough. The car survived, and now drives excellently. It is a bit small to those who have a family to consider, and the boot size is not big enough to fit a pram and the groceries. Also the back seat is small, and could comfortably fit two medium sized adults, but not 3.

The car seems to go through a lot of fuel, both in the city and on the highway, we don't understand why because it has been serviced.

1999 Hyundai Lantra GL 1.8 petrol from Australia and New Zealand

Summary:

A good, reliable car

Faults:

Vibration intrudes throughout the cabin when the engine speed exceeds 3000rpm or 70 km/h.

Noisy, engine made a lot of noise at high revs when pulling and driving, tires and road surface noise came through cabin.

Cheap plasticly interior, but good ergonomics though.

General Comments:

The car is a generally competent, despite a few problems.

It has has a strong 1.8L engine, relatively quick for a car of its price and size.

Like all Hyundai's it is loaded with several features.

The interior was slightly bland with plastics, but was overall was good.

My wife owns a 99 Lantra. Not my choice of car as the cheap plastic interior and exterior lets it down.

The engine is reliable except for a few hose leaks, but I find the manual gear ratios not suited to the engine.

If all one needs is a cheap reliable vehicle that you don't plan to keep long term, it is probably the best offering brand to come out of Korea.

1999 Hyundai Lantra GLS 2.0L from Australia and New Zealand

Summary:

Great, stylish, fantastic car!

Faults:

The light had been disconnected- no fault, just disconnected for show.

The Phillips CD player occasionally showed "CD ERROR", replaced under warranty. Got a brand new one, radio sometimes cuts out.

The disc brakes were making a high screeching sound. Dealer replaced under warranty.

Needed a brake alignment. Dealer repaired it.

General Comments:

The Lantra, slower than the smaller Accents, Excels to start off (which is good in a way). Once higher speeds are reached, it is a very good drive. Very smooth.

Air con and extras work like a dream!

1999 Hyundai Lantra SE 1.8 from Australia and New Zealand

Summary:

A reliable, well performing bargain medium family car

Faults:

Phillips CD player has been replaced twice and needs replacing again (cause faulty volume buttons.)

Remote Central Locking only unlocks drivers door not passengers after only 12 months.

General Comments:

The vehicle is a good all round medium family car & new car warranty does it a lot of favours.

Handles well and is a smart looking car with good interior features.

However wouldn"t buy a Lantra that was close to end of warranty or without warranty.

1999 Hyundai Lantra GLS 2.0 petrol from Australia and New Zealand

Summary:

Really good value for money

Faults:

Remote door locking failed within 2 months of ownership.

Ignition coil pack failed at 10,000 Km resulting in the car running on three cylinders.

All faults quickly rectified.

General Comments:

Much more reliable than my last car.

Great looking car and much better finish quality than I would have thought for the price.

Engine "growls" and sounds harsh under acceleration, but is silky smooth when cruising.

This car would really fly with some minor tweaking. Overall performance feels restrained.

Summary:

Good value for your dollar

Faults:

One of the interior lights keeps blowing out.

General Comments:

Great little car so far, although I'm yet to take it for a long spin.
