1989 Isuzu Amigo SX from North America

Summary:

Fun SUV, way better than a Jeep!

Faults:

At 120,000, the differential seized up. It was spend 4 grand or get another car. Sad, sad day, I actually was in love with my Amigo.

General Comments:

I bought this SUV when my Grand Am was getting beat up in the wooded acreage that I had just bought. I knew that I had to get a more rugged vehicle, as I was going to build a cabin and needed to tow logs.

Like a fool, I bought mine without AC, never again. Even with that minor glitch, I loved that thing, very fun to drive, and plow through snow, mud, and whatever came my way.

The drawback was the soft top (never again!), and if it had a hard top, I might have gone to the expense and replaced the transmission, just to keep the vehicle. The tops shrink at a constant rate, and I had to actually buy a new one halfway through the 10 years I owned it. Still, a great SUV and a lot of fun.

Also, NEVER burned oil at all, fantastic engine.

1989 Isuzu Amigo XS from North America

Summary:

I never want to drive another car

Faults:

Master Brake Cylinder at 178,000

Exhaust System at 140,000

Clutch 100,000

Top replaced twice.

General Comments:

I drove my Amigo (BESSY) off the showroom floor in 1989. I have loved and cared for her - the first 5 years extremely well, and then not as well after that. When I bought it they told me it took all Isuzu pickup truck parts, which has held true EXCEPT for the exhaust system. I spend between $500 to $1000 (avg) per year on maintenance, which is still better than a car payment. My only real complaint has been the top - they don't last more than 4 years, and they are dirty to install and take off.

I just bought a used 1989 Isuzu Amigo SX. ALL original except for the aftermarket offroading BFG tires and custom bead lock rims, front prerunner bumper and rear and raised a few inches (I don't recommend lifting an Amigo, mistake).

Overall I agree with you on what you said about the Amigo; awesome truck, I paid $3,000 dollars for it and put $1,000 dollars in changing the fluids and belts to make sure it runs great. Love offroading it in Yucca Valley c.a. in the desert LOL... Amigo # 1.
