2006 Jaguar S-Type SE 2.7 turbo diesel from Malta

Summary:

I just love this car!

Faults:

The car was one owner with full service history when I bought it. Touch wood, the only thing I needed to replace recently was the heater valve.

General Comments:

Generally it's a great car. The level of accessories of the SE is very good including exceptionally comfortable leather seats, sat nav, auto lights, voice control and CD auto changer, memory for myself and my wife for seat adjustments... the list is endless.

The performance of the car is why I really bought it. The twin turbo diesel offers so much torque, which I love not for speeding but because it pulls you from one traffic light to another in an instant and no effort. My driving is all city driving mostly, and it also averages 36 MPG which is not bad by any measure.

Needless to say, I presume you know that comfort is hard to beat on these cars - and although diesel, it is exceptionally silent. Most friends would not believe it is in fact a diesel.

2006 Jaguar S-Type SE 2.7 turbo diesel from UK and Ireland

Summary:

Expensive to run, but a great car to own

Faults:

Driver's window switch earth.

Fumes in cabin (exhaust flexi-pipe failure).

Lower arm bushes.

General Comments:

I wanted another S-Type after owning a 2003 3.0 petrol some years ago. Due to running costs I went for the diesel model; this was after reading lots of horror stories about DPFs.

Generally it's a great car. The kit level is fantastic! My SE had electric heated leather seats, sat nav, auto lights, voice control and and an auto changer.

Performance was fantastic! The twin turbo diesel offers so much torque, which wafts you down the road with great speed and zero effort. I averaged 38 MPG over my time owning the car, so that was pretty good taking into account I sat on the M25 in stop start traffic daily.

Comfort was hard to beat.

The down sides then. The car had issues from day one, which were resolved under warranty, but that took 6 months. The symptom was diesel fumes in the car. The cause was leaking sections of flex-pipe which attach to the catalytic converters. An OEM replacement section is available and was fitted under warranty. However, they broke a DPF sensor which ended up costing me.

Other than that, I had no issues with the DPF regeneration. Oil levels were stable and I didn't see any signs of diesel contamination in the engine oil (sign of DPF issues).

The car was expensive to run until I found myself a good indie garage. However, I'd lost faith in the car due to bad dealer service by this stage.

Lost 2K in the year I owned the car and spent around 1.5k on servicing and repairs. This included a gear box oil service shortly after purchasing, which is a must IMO.

I'd own another Jaguar, but only if I were feeling flush! Ideally a new car under warranty.

Many happy hours of motoring, even though it cost.
