Summary:

I will never get rid of my Cherokee Chief, it can't be replaced

Faults:

I've owned the Cherokee since it was new.

I've had to replace the rear drive shaft at least 3 times, and with less than 15,000 miles each time. Once I went to straight u-joints and eliminated the constant velocity u-joint, the problem went away.

Clutch also seem to go out too frequently.

General Comments:

This vehicle was put together well. I've driven it everywhere up until a few years ago.

Got almost 80K miles on its first set of brakes.

Cooling system never had a problem, heater core went south when it was 25 years old.

I love the 4-speed manual transmission, and its granny gear. Great for creeping along, or going down steep grades off road.

I've abused it off road, and it always started right up, got me where I wanted to go.

The Cherokee is the best, most dependable vehicle I've ever owned. Hence why I've kept it for 33 years.

My husband has one for sale. He got it in a trade and hasn't done anything to it. It does not run, and he sold the tires and is selling. I really like it and was wondering if you know how much it is worth? The inside is great and the outside looks good to me. I want to fix it, but he doesn't. What is your input? Thanks so much for your time.

Summary:

A do anything workhorse

Faults:

I replaced the front and rear main oil seals.

I upgraded to Chevrolet High Energy Ignition after the original ignition failed.

I rebuilt the front axle after a wheel bearing came apart.

General Comments:

My jeep is a 2 door model and has large amount of space to haul stuff once you fold the back seat up.

It is 4 wheel drive and that has come in handy several times.

The seats are very comfortable.

The 258 cubic inch 6 cylinder (4.2 liter) is incredibly durable and it is the original engine in my jeep. It is a simple engine to work on and everything is easy to get to with no clutter.
