1946 Jeep CJ2A from North America - Comments

"Certainly been worth the money"

What things have gone wrong with the car?

This jeep and a M38 were purchased together in 1955 for $50. The CJ was used to tow the M38.

Steering knuckle seals failed in 1960 and were replaced in 1993. Steering knuckle bearings were also replaced in 1993.

Converted to 12 volt system in 1965.

Engine (original) rebuilt in 1955 and again in 1977.

Major body work performed in 1993 to repair rusted floorboards and fenders.

Oil pump (external) failed in 1998. Removed one shim plate from base plate and restored function.

General comments?

That's it, how about how you liked it, etc.

Love the old Jeep. My grandsons now drive it (off-road).

Four generations have operated the same vehicle.

I am in the process of purchasing a 46 cj-2a mostly original for $1600 from my brother-in-law...anything you can tell me about making it a reliable daily driver? It currently runs and has a driver's side-mirror. Has good amount of rust. Should I buy new tub or cut out rust and weld in new metal... I work in a fab shop.. so I have access to sheet metal. Any reply would be great... at brianreynoso@lycos.com.

I did what you suggested. Got some heavy sheet metal and cut to fit in the floorboards and bed.

Need a good set of main bearings... the oil pump isn't much.

Go to 12 volt (change lamps, put a resistor ahead of the points and hang a GM alternator on it). Use the original starter.

Then have fun!!
