1993 Lada Riva L 1.5 from UK and Ireland

Summary:

Wow that was fun!

Faults:

The only fault in 14000 miles of mainly continental motorway driving came when the clutch finally burned out.

General Comments:

The 1.5 had too much power for the chassis to handle. In the wet I would often find myself facing 90 degrees from the intended direction of travel due to wheel-spin.

I eventually got a top speed of 105mph on the Autobahn between Siege and Cologne (downhill and out of gear). Top speed in gear remained at 99mph.

Given a gravel-covered car park measuring 90m by 60m, I could lap at 50mph without needing to lift once: just turn in and keep the accelerator floored.

The best £60 I ever spent... until I also paid £60 for my current Riva!

You legend! Who needs fast cars!

1993 Lada Riva 1500 1.5 petrol from UK and Ireland

Summary:

A very good, no nonsense, everyday car

Faults:

Battery needed replacement when I bought the car - that's it!!

General Comments:

I bought this car for £50 with 12 months MOT from a friend who just got a nice new eurobox company car.

I replaced the battery - and drove this car for 30,000 miles over two years without any breakdowns or problems at all.

I changed the engine oil & filter every 5,000 miles - and cleaned the sparkplugs at the same time. That's the only work this car had in the time I owned it.

It started every morning without fail.

A little heavy on petrol - but it is an old design.

Rust was starting to creep in around the rear arches - but underneath it was perfect.

Sold the car with another 12 months MOT to another friend for £50 - who then crashed it a week later and wrote it off!!

1993 Lada Riva 1.5E 1.45 from UK and Ireland

Summary:

If you don't like people scrounging lifts - buy one!

Faults:

Clutch started to slip, but I never got around to fixing it before I sold it.

I never put this car through an MOT so I can't comment on what else may have needed doing. Also I never had the guts to ask the chap that bought it, who was going to put it through.

General Comments:

Handles Like a brick.

0 to 60 - still waiting!

May possibly become a cult car one day.

Wife wouldn't drive it. She only sat as a passenger in it under protest.

Mother in law protested even more - OK so it did have some good points!

Very good for towing (loads of up to 1.5 tonnes).

Very solid. A rear impact on the corner of the bumper failed to even scratch the rubber! The front bumper of the metro that hit it was wrecked!

This particular car was very good in terms of lack of rust. I have seen much worse.
