2001 Mercedes-Benz A-Class Avantgarde 1.6 ACS from UK and Ireland

Summary:

Nice car, but overpriced and costly to service /maintain

Faults:

Anti roll bars needed replacement twice due to wear.

Seat adjustment knob broke.

Rear shelf support bracket broke.

General Comments:

A very nice concept, but some design weaknesses that should have been put right by Mercedes.

Mercedes servicing costs are way too high.

I enjoyed my A class, but not the worry of something serious going wrong. The ACS system worked fine, but I began to ask myself what might be the cost if it were to fail?

The alarm had a habit of going off for reasons such as hailstones or a stiff breeze!

2001 Mercedes-Benz A-Class A190 1.9 petrol from Australia and New Zealand

Summary:

Fun economical modern useful car

Faults:

Rear hatch struts replaced.

Blinker lever defaulting to high beam.

Rear hatch lining falling off several times.

Rear hatch would not open.

Failed battery.

Vehicle delivered without wheel nuts for the spare (different length to mag wheels nuts),

General Comments:

Good performance and economy.

Performs the functions that a small vehicle is designed for.

Versatile interior.

Quality of interior plastics is average for the price and reputation of Mercedes Benz.

Creaks and squeaks from door and window surrounds, although no rattles.

Service has been appalling by local dealer. MB Australia have been of great assistance.

2001 Mercedes-Benz A-Class 190 Avant Garde LWB 1.9 petrol from UK and Ireland

Summary:

So close to being a top small car, but..

Faults:

It has had the usual faults:

Drivers seat collapsed and although repaired is not perfect.

Spring pans both sides on front.

Anti roll bar mounts following the front 'knock'

Oh those rusty wheel nuts!! We are on our third set and Merc still can't get them right.

General Comments:

Must say we get excellent economy at around 38 to the gallon, country and town.

Dealer has been good on fixing faults under warranty; but they must be as fed up as we are seeing Merc's quality go down the pan... say no more.

The 190 is very quick even in auto format and an excellent run around, but we find the ride too much on the hard side for really long runs so we use our Lexus.

The LWB is much less choppy than the SWB, and has bags of room. So overall its fine, but it could have been absolutely outstanding if the quality control had been higher.

Purchase price and servicing are not cheap, but then if you want a Merc you have to pay for it and not grumble!

2001 Mercedes-Benz A-Class from UK and Ireland

Summary:

A terrible mistake

Faults:

My gear box completely failed at 32000 miles. I got a repair quote of £5000 for the £8000 car I bought a year back. Unfortunattely it was just 2 weeks after my warranty expired.

General Comments:

Bought the car with high expectations, but am completely disgusted. Mercedes offered 50% contribution, but still remaining £2500 to pay for no fault of mine. Customer services is really disappointing.

2001 Mercedes-Benz A-Class CDi 170 from UK and Ireland

Summary:

I wish I had never set eyes on it

Faults:

The gear box has gone! The car has done 29000 miles only and is just out of warranty. Guess how I am feeling...

General Comments:

I bought a 'decent' car because I wanted trouble free motoring.

A170 CDi Elegance auto,

I too had expensive problems with the auto gearbox, 2.000€ in 18 months, seems to be a VERY common problem that MB are doing NOTHING about. They really should be supplying re-designed gearbox/ECUs at a fraction of the current price to put things right; a really lousy design.

I would NEVER buy a modern Mercedes. Compared to my 1987 2.3-16v, they are rubbish; too complicated, and like most cars today, are not owner friendly at all.

2001 Mercedes-Benz A-Class Elegance 1.4 from UK and Ireland

Faults:

Seat foam was not attached to the frame.

Stone chip in windscreen.

Sold a removable passenger seat, fixed seat fitted.

Electric windows fail once a week.

9mph door locking system failed.

Boot upholstery falls off when closed with the slightest vigor.

Stalls when going down a gear.

Seat height handle snapped off.

5 new tires.

2 sets of front brake pads.

1 set of brake disc's.

Parcel shelf bounces while driving.

Headlight bulbs blow on a regular basis

Rear window washer only sprays water on the inside of the car.

Paint peeled off the bumper.

Under seat drawers shoot out when braking sharply.

General Comments:

I hate this car, I have driven a 190E for years and never though problems like these would be associated to a new Mercades.

For a Mercedes Benz this is absolutely appalling, but I wouldn't have bought one anyway.
