The head gasket blew last year at 110,000 miles and cost £1400 to put right
The foot brake cable snapped at 130,000 miles and cost £350 to rectify.
The airmass control, fuel pump and relay failed at 134,000 miles and this cost £700. No sooner had I collected the vehicle when the low water light came on indicating a hose leak. This was replaced after a long wait for the replacement hose for £50.
The car is incredibly comfortable to drive and covers big distances with ease.
The recent problems have affected my overall opinion however people/mechanics tell me "what do you expect from a vehicle with this mileage". I expect a car of this vintage to reach 200k without bankrupting me!
The automatic gears jolt as they change up-is this normal?
No not normaL, Merc boxes are some of the best around. Auto boxes need clean fluid, so I suggest a fluid refill will sort it! Make sure the correct fluid is used, ie, purchase the proper Mercedes ATF.
Yes, that's right.
My suggestion is flushing your current ATF-oil, and change with Mercedes ATF-oil recommended.
For your info, I'm flushing my ATF-oil every 15,000 km. (equal to 3rd change engine oil)
According to the manual ATF has to be changed every 60.000KM. If there is nothing wrong with your transmission leave it alone!
Best regards.

As long as the thump is on upshifts, quick and doesn't occur during downshifts when braking, this is how they shift... drive another of the same model years, late 80's to mid 90's, they all shift that way.
