2008 Mercedes-Benz Sprinter 2500 3.0L V6 diesel from North America

Summary:

Unmatched driving experience in a cargo van

Faults:

Lots.

I replaced the brakes, drive shaft assembly, glow plugs, both batteries, exhaust pipe, ball joints/tie rods, intercooler pipes, struts, sway bar, 2 injectors, transmission output seal.

A lot of those issues I just write down to wear and tear. Batteries / drive shaft assembly / rusted exhaust pipe / ball joints.

General Comments:

Despite putting a lot of money into this van --- I LOVE driving this van. I came from driving Fords/Chevy and there is no comparison in terms of the driving experience when it comes to the Sprinter. I feel like I am driving around a luxury sedan in terms of handling/road noise / suspension components. The front cab is cavernous in size and everything is laid out logically.

It is not physically possible for me to work out of a standard roofed cargo van anymore. The price I have paid in maintenance is worth it in terms of my quality of life of being able to stand up and grab supplies out of my van and keep it gloriously organized.

I am not planning on buying a new van anytime soon, but if I do my first choice would be a Mercedes Sprinter --- maybe that tantalizing battery version coming out!

2004 Mercedes-Benz Sprinter 213 CDi 2.2 turbo diesel from Austria

Summary:

Rubbish

Faults:

This car is real garbage. There are parts in it that are useless, impossible to maintain because you do not know they exist, but they can disable the vehicle even in the middle of driving (for example "start error") and whose repair will cost you a lot of money. The Mercedes Sprinter is the garbage I want to get rid of.

General Comments:

Extremely poor quality of the vehicle, all the quality is contained in the engine and transmission, everything else - bodywork, interior, plastic parts, rubber hoses, very poorly made of bad material. I think poor performance is planned to force you to buy a new car after 15 years of use. I am very disappointed with this famous brand and I never want to invest a penny in any Mercedes vehicle again.

17 years old, 180K mileage... sounds fair enough to me. Can't ask for much more than that out of any vehicle. Mercedes were definitely in a quality downturn during the early 2000's however (rust, and other issues were common on most vehicles).

Numbers are in kms - 180,000 kms = 110,000 miles, it's really low miles for a work vehicle that is supposed to take you well past 200,000 miles. These german made cars are troubled and expensive to fix. Mercedes quality is only a myth.

For personal vehicles, Mercedes is a prestige thing. For work vehicles the prestige thing is obviously absent so you are left to deal with the complex, expensive and troubled german engineering. Nothing fancy about this brand as a van.

2014 Mercedes-Benz Sprinter 2500 3.0 turbo diesel V6 from North America

Summary:

Worth the money

Faults:

Transmission skipped after a couple of years, but fixed under warranty.

Door lock failed, warranty.

Extended warranty was useful, but didn't apply to DEF heater which failed.

General Comments:

Pros: amazingly drivable for a 3/4 ton truck! Does great through hills, actually fun in corners!! I'd love to take it to auto-cross, but I don't think they'll let me.

Mercedes have the steering, suspension and drivetrain down pat. Lots of power when you need it. Between good and very good on fuel, depending how you use it.

Simple but very nice fit and finish. The room in the rear is magnificent. Customers are always impressed when you drive up in it. If anything goes wrong it's expensive to fix, though. Only rated to tow 5000lb.

2009 Mercedes-Benz Sprinter CDi 2.1 turbo diesel from UK and Ireland

Summary:

Powerful and lots of space

Faults:

Not much, the van was maintained by the company I worked for; as far as I'm aware just basic maintained and servicing was performed, and it got any wear and tear such as brakes and suspension parts replaced and so on.

General Comments:

The Sprinter is a fast, reliable and plenty of space type of van - you see lots of these on the roads, but not many reviews so here's my experience with one as a works van for a couple of years. It's a good van, used for work and generally not much to say about it, however it was slightly better than my previous van (a VW Crafter) which that van was apparently based on this one, so that's interesting.

The Mercedes felt better built and swallowed huge loads no problems, especially if you get the Long Wheel Base (LWB) version.

To drive the auto box was strange on a diesel van at first, but I got used to it and it actually gave pretty decent power and economy. I was on the road everyday and put serious mileage on it.

Overall I'd recommend this van to anyone; not as expensive to run as you might think for a Mercedes.
