1984 Mercedes-Benz W123 300D from North America - Comments

"Quality, durability, economy, and distinctive class, all wrapped up into one affordable package"

What things have gone wrong with the car?

Air conditioning compressor froze up at 148.000 miles.

Starter went out at 168.00 miles.

General comments?

The W123 300D Turbo-diesel is practically bullet proof. The car is put together like a tank. Solid construction, incomparable fit and finish, constructed of high grade materials, and does not exhibit any signs of aging that would normally be expected of a 20 year old car. There is no shimmy or shake in the body, no out of character vibrations, and absolutely no rattles or squeaks from the interior. It's as though the car was carved from a block of iron.

Engine has plenty of power with the turbo, and has ample amounts of torque.

Highway cruising at speeds of 70mph and up is effortless, and has handled many 500+ mile trips without trouble.

The interior is very comfortable, seats firm, but well sprung. There is ample space for four adults, and the trunk is very spacious. Windows are large, and allow for maximum viewing pleasure from inside the car. The design of the dash is quite striking, with its round air vents, timeless clean lines, and ergonomics lending to a very simple, elegant, un-cluttered, open view through the windshield.

With its high reliability record, ability to run for hundreds of thousands of miles with proper maintenance, and excellent fuel economy thanks to the diesel engine, it is perhaps better than any new car available on the market today. It's an extremely economical classic car that can be driven anywhere, and looks the part as well.

Amen, brother! I also own a black 1984 Mercedes-Benz 300D W123 with only 116,000 miles on it. Bought it recently for only $100 from a family friend (she has a new C230 with free maintenance). Spent another $100 to convert the air conditioning. So, for only about $200, I have a classic, inexpensive-to-run, comfortable, quiet, luxurious, and good-looking car that will probably last me most of the rest of my life (I'm 44). What more could you ask for?

I have been driving my 82 300D from Burlington VT (right next to the Canadian border) to Boston roundtrip for the last 3 years. I make this trip 4 days a week because I didn't want to relocate and my Industructable 300D has 575,000 miles on it and it seems to want to drive more! I change the oil every 8k miles because I add a few quarts here and there. When I move to florida next year, I will find a 300D that isn't rotted out and drive it until they take my license away from me!

Just bought my first: 84 300D Turbo great car tight, cold ac 225,000 on the clock. $2800 USD right at blue book value. It was on the lot for 5 hours, the guy was getting ready to bolt on a dealer plate and keep it. I walked up and cash talked.

LOL! And you know you'll be able to sell it for $2,800 or more in 10 years.

People know these cars are amazing.

Congrats on your purchase. I'd wish you good luck, but there is no luck involved in Mercedes' high quality.

Received my 84 300d turbo from my uncle in chula vista as a gift. thought it will be a headache, but turned out my best car ever. the ride is better than a honda odyssey, the mileage at 267,000 is nothing. change oil and filters are the key. I love this car so much. i am saving up to store the paint and hopefully upgrade the rims to size 15, the ones being used at the 190E's. I am 36 years old and this car will make you look good. I guarantee it.

Good afternoon. I have a 1984 300TD and am looking to possibly sell it, however, www.kbb.com only gives values back to 1987. Does anyone know how much this car is worth? The help would be VERY much appreciated...

Specs: about 285,000 miles, light blue, 4 door, tan leather interior, chrome stock rims, sun roof.

The car has been taken care of with oil changes, tune ups, etc... There is a rebuilt engine that was just put in it last year. There is no rust because this vehicle for quite some time has been in Texas and now in Florida (no snow).

I will check back in a few days to see if anyone has posted any info about this. Thanks again!!

If your 300TD is in very good condition, you can get $5000 for it, if not more, on eBay. 300TD's converted to run on vegetable oil and well upgraded have sold for $12G to $15G on eBay. Due to their relative rarity in comparison to the sedans, these wagons command impressive prices.
