1999 Mercury Cougar from North America

Summary:

Awesome for a first car

Faults:

I love my car. It was my first running car.

The previous owner hit a deer, and dented both fenders, cracked both headlights, and cracked the bumper. Never got that stuff fixed; it never affected anything.

Back strut is going bad; other than that, there are only two things that are wrong with the car. The check engine light is on, but it is probably the gas cap, because I don't have one, and the cruise doesn't work.

Other than that, it is a great car; would definitely buy another one.

1999 Mercury Cougar 2.5L V6 from North America

Faults:

Check engine light has been on for 3 years.

Motor on driver's side window is out.

Replaced battery 2 times.

Replaced alternator.

New tires 2 times.

Sunroof does not work.

Rear hatch back does not open with remote.

Had all four O2 sensors replaced.

General Comments:

I purchased the car in 2001, and it has been paid off since 2007. It ran GREAT for a long time! I paid $13K for it and this is the first car out of 5 that I have not blown the engine on! So yes, I took much better care of this one!

The check engine light came on about 3 years ago, and every time I had my oil checked, I had them check to see what the light was still on (every three months). No one could ever find the reason why. The last time they were able to get the light off, so I could pass emissions, but that only lasted one day.

Now, there is a blinking "exclamation point" on the dash that comes on, and it jerks and sputters when I take off from a light... but runs fine once I'm in 4th gear (even though it is a manual transmission).

Going to have it looked at today. I've read so many of these comments with the SAME problems I'm having! Last comment was January, 2010. Anyone else still having the same problems and what to do to fix it? Please email me. mrcrawford@qwest.net

1999 Mercury Cougar Sport 2.5 V6 from North America

Summary:

Better than a Dodge

Faults:

On my 99 Cougar V6 5 speed, out of nowhere my spider gears broke inside of the transmission, and the lights on the dash dim when I give it a little gas; it has a brand new battery and alternator.

My sun roof gets jammed.

Other than that, the motor runs strong and is good on gas. The car is fun to drive, and can outrun 90's Mustangs with V8s; it scoots.

I like this car, but people can't complain really; it's all how you take care of the car and drive the car. That's any car; all cars will have problems with them.

General Comments:

One mod I have is the exhaust system.

This car rides and handles awesome, almost as good as my Camaro IROC.

This car for a V6 is kinda fast. I took it to the track and went a 15.03 in a quarter-mile; that was impressive for this car with no mods.

1999 Mercury Cougar i 4 cylinder from North America

Summary:

I'll never buy another Ford/Lincoln/Mercury again

Faults:

I've had this car for about two years, and have had nothing but problems with it.

The car seems to have a miss in the engine, and it chugs bucks when I'm giving it gas. It seems when I hit the gas, it actually cuts the power significantly.

On top of being a huge pain in the you know what, it almost caused a few accidents when I'm trying to pull out into traffic.

I took it to Advance Auto Parts; they plugged their little machine into the computer and said it was a miss in cylinder 3, and that I needed to replace the spark plugs and wires. I did, and it made no difference.

On top of that, the suspension is in "good" condition, but is still an extremely rough ride, and the car makes a very loud knocking/cracking noise when I'm pulling out from a stop with the steering wheel turned more than halfway in either direction, and I can't figure out what is causing any of this.

And in the last month, the hand brake started sticking. When I go to lower the hand brake, it goes almost all the way down, then stops as if it was hitting something, but there isn't anything in its way, it stops just high enough for the brake light on my dash to stay on.

If anyone can shed any light on my dilemmas, please do. My e-mail is (Deshidk1@gmail.com) Please please please help if you can.

General Comments:

I have Cougar with a 4 cylinder engine and a 5 speed manual transmission. The car is pitifully slow and generally seems poorly designed; everything about this car seems to done cheaply. I can't wait to sell this car and buy another Honda.
