1986 Mercury Topaz GS 2.3 I-4 from North America

Summary:

Fast, furious, but the repairs sure hurt

Faults:

There have been many things I have had to replace since I had it. I have had to replace the clutch, as it hadn't been replaced for 8 years by the previous owner.

I had to have the flywheel resurfaced.

I have had to replace the emergency brake, and the front brakes.

The front drums had to be resurfaced.

The alternator and the battery both had to be replaced.

The a/c wasn't a necessity, but it also had to be replaced.

The heater core had to be replaced.

General Comments:

I only paid $1,000 for the car when I initially bought it. Since then, I've put almost double that into it in repairs.

The good news with putting so much into it is that it should last me a very long time. It's very fast as I have yet to be defeated in a street race, and the car takes such a beating like you would never believe.

Most people when I race them laugh at the car because of what it is, but when they catch up to me a block later and their jaws are on the floor, I can't help, but laugh back at them. Overall, it's a really good car if you can afford to keep up with the repair work.

I own a 87 Topaz and I love it! As the review states, it is FAST! The high swirl combustion chamber is the secret. I wonder why the Japanese auto makers never adopted the technology? Lord knows, they've copied everything else!

I have a 1986 Topaz GS and its top speed is 141 KPH (87 MPH) In my opinion it is not that fast.

1986 Mercury Topaz GS 2.3L HO from North America

Summary:

There is no car in the world more reliable or safe than a Topaz

Faults:

Well considering the age of my car lets just say that I have pretty much replaced everything that usually wears out. The most annoying problem I have experienced is the engine stalling (related to faulty O2 sensors), and the screeching of the fan belt on a cold start. Aside from that I LOVE MY TOPAZ and always will. Oh and the sun roof leaks pretty bad too.

General Comments:

I have owned my Topaz since 1995 and can't imaging my life without it. My Husband and I have been married for two years now and he's a Doctor and I'm a nurse... some imagine why a Doctor's wife would still be driving a Topaz...it's simple... you just cannot kill a Topaz, hey, give me a break I've owned the car since HS, I am emotionally attached.
