1998 Mitsubishi Delica Cargo GX 2.5 turbo diesel from Australia and New Zealand

Summary:

Good all round, solid and reliable

Faults:

Glow plugs needed replacing since they were past their best.

General Comments:

Good driving position and performs quite well given the size of the vehicle.

Handles well on winding roads and uneven surfaces.

Solid build quality and very spacious inside.

The van will do 100+ Km on 10 liters of diesel, and is not noisy on the motorway.

Lots of loading room in the back for all sorts of things. Bench seat flips forward, ideal.

Struggles a bit going up steep hills, best to get the speed up before tackling inclines.

Goes like a train going downhill though.

Easy to park given the size.

I have a 1998 Delica as my work vehicle. I agree with most points in this particular survey, like the comfortable seating position and good economy. But I don't agree with the points about handling, particularly around corners. The vehicle is quite narrow, so it kind of veers around corners with the amount of weight it has, and it's not particularly fast. Even though it is a turbo, it doesn't seem to kick in until you hit 80 km in fifth gear.

I also have big problems with starting the vehicle first thing in the morning. The glow plugs keep blowing.

To add to the previous comment I made about this model, the van has a terrible turning circle. I have to take a wide birth to get the thing to do a u-turn in a road. Some cases I've hit the footpath. It's quite incredible how bad the turning is.
